Ego Death Trip is a Hamilton, Ontario based band that infuses groove-laden, hypnotic psychedelia with sounds from around the globe. The band is on a mission to create a new musical vocabulary that reflects the diasporic roots of the band while engaging deeply with musical forms like funk, folk, and psychedelia. The band was forming in the winter on 2023, and it consists of Anan Rahman on vocals, guitar, and other stringed instruments; David Byer on bass; Justin Bennett on drums; and Krutarth Shitut on tabla.
While the deep grooves and kaleidoscopic jams are supremely important to the band, the music is informed by explicitly anti-colonial worldview that is nourished by distinctly non-western sources ranging from South Asian classical and folk traditions, and Islamic mysticism.
