The 360pan suite came out of the fierce hope that an old affection - ambisonics, would now finally definitely make it, because somebody thought of it in the context of head-tracked VR, an application that requires headphones, in Arjen’s opinion the only medium it is perfect for. Arjen tells a fascinating story of the creation of Audio Ease and the famous Altiverb and we explore the topic of convolution for spatial audio. Patrick graduated from Glasgow Caledonian University (2019) with a BSc in Audio Systems Engineering. Patrick has since achieved an MSc by research in Audio Technology at the Audiolab, University of York (2021), where they currently continue their research as a PhD student. Patrick’s research explores the development, application and evaluation of bleeding-edge network music performance systems, with a focus on immersive audio. This work investigates how spatial audio and virtual acoustics can be applied to make network music experiences more like live performance, and examines the effect this can have on the way we interact with one another musically in shared virtual spaces. Patrick’s research also includes high-impact industry collaboration within the MINERVA project. Beyond academia, Patrick is an avid enthusiast of all things audio and has experience in various roles across the industry, including broadcast, live sound, sound for film, and music recording and production. Patrick discusses in depth the current advancements in remote spatial audio networking for a range of industry use cases covering the core technology, signal flow and available workflows. Juergen Herre received a degree in Electrical Engineering from Friedrich-Alexander-Universität in 1989 and a Ph.D. degree for his work on error concealment of coded audio. He joined the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) in Erlangen, Germany, in 1989. There he has been involved in the development of perceptual coding algorithms for high-quality audio, including the well-known ISO/MPEG-Audio Layer III coder (aka “MP3”). In 1995, he joined Bell Laboratories for a PostDoc term working on the development of MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding (AAC). By the end of 1996, he went back to Fraunhofer IIS to work on the development of more advanced multimedia technology including MPEG-4, MPEG-7, MPEG-D, MPEG-H and MPEG-I, currently as the Chief Executive Scientist for the Audio/Multimedia activities at Fraunhofer IIS, Erlangen. In September 2010, Prof. Dr. Herre was appointed full professor at the University of Erlangen and the International Audio Laboratories Erlangen. He is an expert in low-bit-rate audio coding/perceptual audio coding, spatial audio coding, parametric audio object coding, perceptual signal processing and semantic audio processing. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Herre is a fellow member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES), chair of the AES Technical Committee on Coding of Audio Signals and vice chair of the AES Technical Council. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Juergen Herre is a senior member of the IEEE, a member of the IEEE Technical Committee on Audio and Acoustic Signal Processing, served as an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing and was an active member of the MPEG audio subgroup for almost three decades. Juergen explains the science of the key technology concepts behind the worldwide adopted family of MPEG codecs and we discuss the latest addition of the reference model for the virtual and augmented reality audio standard - MPEG-I Immersive Audio. Mariam works as a composer and sound artist – combining electronics, electroacoustics and 3D sound technology with visuals, dance and live performance to penetrate deep into the physical and emotional essence of sound and space. Growing up in eastern Georgia, she sang and played the piano, and studied composition in Tbilisi, Budapest and Oslo. Through her subject matter, her compositions display a curiosity about the world and society – from distractions during online meetings in DAYDREAMING (2022), to the viral patterns in DECONSTRUCTION (2020). Other works explore the Syrian war, a globally- sourced collection of songs and prayers, and a river soundscape in Oslo. John Henry Dale is an immersive media artist, musician and entrepreneur focused on live spatial audio and video performance, based between Miami and New York. He holds an MSc in Digital Composition and Performance from the University of Edinburgh and composes, performs, and produces music across a range of genres from electronica, jazz, funk, Latin, global bass and ambient, to avant-garde and serialist composition projects. He has also worked extensively in the confluence of IT, Web, AV, Live Streaming, and Immersive Media technology at The Regional Arts and Culture Council, New World Symphony, Hive Streaming and Linkedin. Most recently in July of 2023, he worked with Merijn Royaards and the Sonic Sphere project to help create custom spatial audio mixes in SPAT, Reaper and Ableton Live of selected works for the Sonic Sphere residency at the Shed and also created a personalised spatial audio mix and listening session for Mike Bloomberg and Marina Abramovic. John Henry performed his live music for his “In Viridi Lux” spatial audio performance project inside the Sonic Sphere as part of a 2023 Miami Individual Artist grant funded by the National Endowment for The Arts and the Miami-Dade Cultural Affairs Department. Merijn Royaards is a sound architect, researcher, and performer guided by convoluted movements through music, art, and spatial studies. The interaction between space and sound in cities with a history/present of conflict has been a recurring theme in his multimedia works to date. His 2020 awarded doctoral thesis explores the state-altering effects of sound, space, and movement from the Russian avant-garde to today’s clubs and raves. He is one part of a critical essay film practice with artist-researcher Henrietta Williams and teaches sound design for film and installation art at the Bartlett School of Architecture. JH and Merijn talk about the evolution of Sonic Sphere as a concept, playback system and performance space. They talk about the practical aspects of crafting and experiencing different spatial audio content within the spherical structures. Alejandro Cabrera is an Audio Software Developer and the Founder of Audio Brewers. Originally from Colombia, currently based in Athens, Greece. To find more, visit holoplot.com. In this episode of the Immersive Audio Podcast, Monica Bolles is joined by the musician and Senior Sound Technologist at Meow Wolf - Les Stuck from New Mexico, US. Les began working in spatial audio while working for the Ensemble Modern and the Frankfurt Ballet in Frankfurt, Germany. He designed the touring six-channel sound system for Frank Zappa's Yellow Shark Tour, which included a 6-channel ring microphone. He then worked at IRCAM in Paris, where he built several spatializers in Max/FTS - a 6-channel version for Pierre Boulez’s ...explosante-fixe... premiere, an unusual 8-channel version specifically adapted to classical opera houses for Philippe Manoury’s opera 60e Parallèle, and a signal-controlled panner that allowed extremely fast movement. He designed a 7-channel sound system at Mills College that featured an overhead speaker and built a variety of spatializers for students and guest composers. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of John Chowning’s seminal work on the digital simulation of sound spatialization, Les realized a version of his algorithm for release with Max/MSP in 2021, including panned reverb and the Doppler effect, all controlled at signal rate. Currently Les works at Meow Wolf, where he designs interactive sound installations and acoustical treatments. He has developed several spatial plugins for Ableton Live, which typically include a binaural output to preview the results in headphones before going on-site. He led a collaboration with Spatial, Inc for Meow Wolf’s installation at South by Southwest, and did extensive testing of Holoplot speakers for a future Meow Wolf project. Les talks about his extensive career, working with spatial audio since the 1980s, including projects with Frank Zappa, IRCAM, Cycling74, and we dive into the topic of interactive spatial audio for physical installations. In this episode of the Immersive Audio Podcast, Oliver Kadel and Monica Bolles are joined by the sound artists and co-founders (ZiMMT) Felix Deufel and Paul Hauptmeier, from Leipzig, Germany. Felix Deufel is a sound artist focusing on sound and space, spatial hearing, and the significance of soundscapes for both humans and the environment. His artistic works encompass room installations, compositions, field trips, and research. Deufel is the founder of Not a Number Studio, which is currently developing 3D audio software. In 2020, he established the Centre for Immersive Media Art, Music, and Technology (ZiMMT) in Leipzig, providing a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in the realms of immersive media art and technology. Paul Hauptmeier, born in 1993 in Jakarta, is a composer and sound artist based in Leipzig. He studied electroacoustic composition with Robin Minard and Maximilian Marcoll at the University of Music FRANZ LISZT Weimar and at the “University of California San Diego” with Katharina Rosenberger, Natacha Diels and Miller Puckette. Since 2009 he works together with Martin Recker as an artist duo in the field of composition, sound and multimedia art. In addition to works for theatre and opera, live electronics, radio and electro-acoustic music, their focus lies on sound installations and multichannel audio productions. Since October 2022 they work and teach in the field of sound art at the art university Burg Giebichenstein in Halle Germany. Additionally, they teach spatial composition at the University for Music and Theatre Leipzig. He is a founding member of the ZiMMT (Center for Immersive Media Art, Music and Technology) in Leipzig, where he conducts research in the field of spatial audio and organises workshops, panels, concerts and exhibitions on the subject. Besides multichannel-based 3D audio, he has a strong interest in augmented reality in the field of sound and multimedia art. His latest work in this realm was a large-scale multi-media installation for lasers, position tracking and binaural audio and was shown at the Biennale Musica 2022 in Venice. Felix and Paul talk about the founding of the Center for Immersive Media Art, Music and Technology (ZiMMT) as an independent organisation and Spatial Audio Network Germany (SANG) initiative collectively aimed at educating and nurturing artists who want to learn and incorporate spatial audio in their artwork. Mélia Roger is a sound designer for film and art installations. She has a classical music background and has a Master's Degree in sound engineering (ENS Louis-Lumière, Paris). She spent the last year of her Master's in the Transdisciplinary Studies Program at the Zurich University of the Arts, Switzerland, where she developed an artistic approach to sound, working with voice and field recordings. She is now living between Paris and Zurich, working in post-production for film and her personal art projects. Grégoire Chauvot is a sound designer who graduated from the prestigious La Femis in Paris. Working mainly with cinema, he uses field recording to the foreground in his approach to film sound and never hesitates to leave the studio in search of new material. His interest in collecting unique and immersive sounds led him to develop in collaboration with Mélia Roger and HAL a recording rig designed specifically for Dolby Atmos capture. Mélia and Grégoire talk about their collaboration with HAL Audio resulting in the development of a 7.0.2 audio recording rig designed to capture Dolby Atmos natively and the recent launch of the Urban Atmos SFX library for the multichannel postproduction workflow. Jelmer Althuis is the founder of The Sphere of Sound, audio director at VRelax and sound designer at Aku.World. In this episode of the Immersive Audio Podcast, Oliver Kadel and Monica Bolles are joined by the co-founder at Audio Ease - Arjen Van Der Schoot from Utrecht, Netherlands. Arjen studied music technology at the Utrecht School of Arts. After which Arjen and 4 of his fellow graduates started Audio Ease in 1995. He was freelancing recording Classical music, Minoring in Classical guitar and majoring in software development for audio and music. Together they made about 10 products before their big break with Altiverb which became an industry standard. The 360pan suite came out of the fierce hope that an old affection - ambisonics, would now finally definitely make it, because somebody thought of it in the context of head-tracked VR, an application that requires headphones, in Arjen’s opinion the only medium it is perfect for. Arjen tells a fascinating story of the creation of Audio Ease and the famous Altiverb and we explore the topic of convolution for spatial audio. In this episode of the Immersive Audio Podcast, Oliver Kadel and Monica Bolles are joined by the Co-Founder and Co-Der of SPATIAL - Michael Plitkins, from Los Angeles, California. Before founding Spatial, Michael was a founding engineer at Nest which was ultimately acquired by Google. Michael helped develop a set of groundbreaking smart consumer products for the home like the Nest Thermostat and helped define the category we know as Home IoT today. Prior to Nest, he was a founding engineer at Tellme Networks, which was acquired by Microsoft. He also has experience in developing tools and technologies for 3D modelling, animation, VR and graphics. Michael has over 35 patents in UI design, streaming audio, smart home optimization and more. Michael co-founded Spatial with the amazing idea that sound should not always be linear or channel based, where he patented the Spatial Reality technology; the Spatial audio rendering platform that allows sound to move, using object-based audio and acoustic physics. Michael also developed key integrations within Spatial’s platform that allows new tools to take advantage of Spatial IP. Michael shares the story of the creation of SPATIAL as a company which subsequently developed into a multifaceted platform for sound designers. Poul Holleman is co-founder and technical director of the spatial sound and creative development studio, 4DSOUND. As a creative technologist, Poul focuses on the application of spatial sound to a variety of art forms, ranging from light installations to kinetic architecture and live performances. His work focuses on the continuous development and exploration of spatial sound as an emerging artistic medium, through the use of 4DSOUND technology. He is a lecturer in the Creative Systems Design programme at Utrecht University of the Arts (HKU). Next to his artistic achievements, Poul holds a Master’s degree in Cultural Sociology from the University of Amsterdam. Salvador Breed creates and sculpts sound and technology for a wide field of contexts like live performances, fashion shows, video art, and interactive art installations. The Dutch artist preoccupies himself with the way acoustics, natural ambience, silence, and space enrich one another, using subtle means to expand our notions of listening, experiencing, and sensing. As a co-founder of spatial sound company 4DSOUND, he specializes in composing space as an important element of soundtracks - while pushing the technical possibilities in this field. Poul and Salvador dive deep into the technical make-up of 4DSOUND software architecture along with their unique speaker system implementation and we explore the concept of using a physical space as an instrument. Professor Adam Ganz is Head of Screenwriting at Royal Holloway, University of London and Head of the Writers Room at StoryFutures Academy, the UK’s National Centre for Immersive Storytelling. In addition to leading StoryFutures Academy on the ‘One Story, Many Voices’ Project with Imperial War Museum, he designed and ran a project on writing for Immersive Audio with Inua Ellams, Jayde Adams, Georgina Campbell, Fryars and Rae Morris. He was also nominated for best single drama for the BBC for his play The Gestapo Minutes. Rachel Donnelly is Project Manager for the Second World War and Holocaust Partnership Programme (SWWHPP) at Imperial War Museums. She began working on SWWHPP in early 2020 having previously been the Learning and Audience Advocate for IWM’s new Holocaust Galleries and Holocaust Learning Manager for schools. SWWHPP is a three-year project led by IWM and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund to support cultural organisations across the UK to engage with local communities to share lesser-known stories related to the Second World and Holocaust. As part of the programme, the cultural organisations, local communities and IWM worked with StoryFutures Academy, to create an immersive touring sound installation with stories written by a group of celebrated UK-based writers. In this episode, Adam and Rachel explain how binaural audio was used to enhance their traditional and immersive storytelling techniques and discuss the ‘One Story, many voices’ museum installation case study. In this episode of the Immersive Audio Podcast, Oliver Kadel, Monica Bolles and Bjørn Jacobsen are joined by a Principal Dev Leader at the Mixed Reality division at Microsft Noel Cross and Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research Nikunj Raghuvanshi from Redmond, US. Nikunj likes to invent techniques that create immersive sight and sound from computation. He is endlessly fascinated with simulating the laws of physics in real-time and finds it thrilling to search for simple algorithms that unfold into complex physical behaviour. He has over a decade of research and development experience at the intersection of computational audio, graphics, and physics, with over fifty papers and patents. His inventions have been successfully deployed in the industry, particularly Project Acoustics, which is bringing immersive sound propagation to many major AAA game franchises today. Nikunj is currently a Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research. Previously, he initiated interactive sound simulation research at UNC-Chapel Hill during his PhD studies, whose codebase was acquired by Microsoft. Noel grew up playing games on my Commodore 64 and Amiga computers. His love for multimedia computing helped him to start working at Microsoft as an intern in 1991 in the multimedia team. This was the age of the SoundBlaster 16 ISA cards and CD-ROMs were just being introduced into PCs. Out of the multimedia team, the DirectX team was born to accelerate the development of high-quality games for the PC. Noel worked on DirectSound and audio drivers for Windows getting a taste of the game development community attending several GDCs in the 90s. This was the first time he was introduced to 3D audio algorithms and at the time the technology didn’t impress much. Through the 2000s, he worked on every release of Windows with the focus on improving the audio subsystem. This led to the complete overhaul of the audio infrastructure on the Windows Vista platform which has remained largely intact since introduced in 2006. The most current stop on his Microsoft journey is working on Mixed Reality devices. He worked on the speech and audio functionality exposed from HoloLens and Windows Mixed Reality devices with a concentration on spatial audio. After having lackluster impact in the 90s with spatial audio, he’s been reinvigorated working on this technology with the introduction of high-quality HRTFs and head-tracking services to complete the experience. Spatial audio processing has also led Noel to better understand the impact of acoustics on virtual 3d worlds. His team is currently working on Project Acoustics which allows developers of 3d titles to take advantage of wave-based simulations to handle how audio propagates in the real world. In this episode, Nikunj and Noel dive deep into the topic of physics-based virtual acoustics along with Project Triton and Project Acoustics covering fundamental theory, research, technology and case studies. In this episode of the Immersive Audio Podcast, Oliver Kadel and Monica Bolles are joined by the director of the Applied Psychoacoustics Laboratory at the University of Huddersfield – Hyunkook Lee. Dr Hyunkook Lee is a Reader (i.e., Associate Professor) in Music Technology and the Director of the Applied Psychoacoustics Laboratory, University of Huddersfield, U.K. His research over the last 10 years contributed to advancing the understanding of three-dimensional (3D) audio perception and developing new 3D capture and reproduction techniques. He has invented various psychoacoustics-based 3D microphone arrays including PCMA-3D and ESMA-3D, whose principle for height microphone configuration has been adopted for Schoep’s award-winning ORTF-3D array. Recently, he has been focusing on researching and developing perceptually optimised techniques of 6DoF audio rendering for extended reality applications. He is also currently leading a multidisciplinary project that connects immersive arts and technologies. From 2006 to 2010, he was a Senior Research Engineer in audio R&D with LG Electronics, South Korea, where he participated in the standardisations of MPEG audio codecs and developed spatial audio algorithms for mobile devices. He is an Associate Technical Editor of the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society (AES). He co-edited a recently published book “3D Audio” (Routledge). Hyunkook is a Fellow of the AES, Vice-Chair of the AES High-Resolution Audio Technical Committee, and has recently been elected as a Governor of the AES for 2022-2023. Dr Lee received a B. Mus (Hons) degree in music and sound recording (Tonmeister) from the University of Surrey, U.K., in 2002 and a PhD in spatial audio psychoacoustics from the Institute of Sound Recording (IoSR), the University of Surrey in 2006. In this episode of the Immersive Audio Podcast, Oliver Kadel and Monica Bolles are joined by the founder and CEO of Sound Particles Nuno Fonseca from Leiria, Portugal. Nuno Fonseca (PhD), is the founder and CEO of Sound Particles company, and was the creator of Sound Particles software, a 3D CGI-like audio software used in all major Hollywood studios in productions such as “Star Wars 9”, “Frozen II”, “Aquaman” or “Game of Thrones”. Former university professor (computer science and music technology areas), Nuno is the author of the Portuguese book “Introdução à Engenharia de Som” (Introduction to Sound Engineering), co-author of the Portuguese book “Desenvolvimento em iOS” (iOS Development), author of "All You Need to Know About 3D Audio" ebook, and author of more than 20 papers regarding audio research. He is a member of AES, SMPTE, CAS, MPSE, AMPS, and a member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES) Technical Committee on “Audio for Cinema”. In this episode, Nuno shares the story of the creation of Sound Particles and he explains the core operational principles of Physics-based Audio and its unique sonic properties. In this episode of the Immersive Audio Podcast, Oliver Kadel is joined by head of the SoundLab group Ulli Scuda and research engineer Philipp Eibl at Fraunhofer IIS, over Zoom from Bavaria, Germany. Ulli Scuda got a Tonmeister degree at the Film University Potsdam-Babelsberg where he also got his PhD. His experience covers sound recording, sound design and mixing for various film and music formats, ranging from binaural up to 22.2. He was a visiting lecturer at the Ansbach University of Applied Sciences. Today he heads the SoundLab group in the audio department at Fraunhofer IIS where he researches 3D-Audio production and reproduction technologies, as well as microphone arrays and production workflows. His main expertise is immersive audio production, interactive and object-based audio. Philipp Eibl is a research engineer for Fraunhofer IIS, specializing in Next Generation Audio and the development of NGA production tools in particular. Together with his colleagues, he mixes content for interactive and immersive experiences and advises industry partners on how they can integrate object-based audio production into their workflows. Philipp joined Fraunhofer after studying Multimedia Art as well as Media Technology and Production in Salzburg and Amberg and interning in music and broadcast production. His years of employment in a radio broadcast at the Bayerischer Rundfunk gave him first-hand experience and knowledge of the day-to-day work in both production and live broadcast environments at one of Germany’s largest radio stations. In this episode, we discuss and compare new generation spatial audio codec MPEG-H and associated authoring tools for its ecosystem.
