Guests: Michael J. Socolow has been awarded the 2018 Broadcast Historian Award for his book, Six Minutes in Berlin: Broadcast Spectacle and Rowing Gold at the Nazi Olympics. The award is given to an educator who has published or produced work specifically related to broadcast/media history by the Library of American Broadcasting Foundation (LABF) in partnership with the Broadcast Education Association (BEA). From the announcement: "Socolow uses a single case study – the gold-medal winning rowing crew from the University of Washington, which upset the Germans in front of Adolf Hitler and 75,000 fans–to illustrate the development of sports broadcasting at the personal, national, and global levels. He interweaves the broadcast of that race, heard by millions in the United States, with the memories of the oarsmen and contemporaneous press accounts to revisit the dramatic and exciting origins of live global sportscasting." Jerry Breyer, Washington Post Sports Columnist: In his latest column, The Washington Post’s Sports Columnist Jerry Brewer writes that the Washington Redskins have consistently made deplorable decisions leading up to the new report showing the team allegedly allowed deep-pocked male sponsors and FedEx Field suite holders access to see Redskins cheerleaders topless or wearing only body paint. Brewer goes on to write that the Redskins’ inability to get things right is due to owner Daniel Snyder and team president Bruce Allen who “continue to lead one of the NFL’s most important franchises deeper into the sewer.”
