In this episode, we delve into the concept of being "qualified" in the workplace, examining who gets labeled as such, who doesn't, and the underlying reasons. We explore "competency checking"—the practice of scrutinizing individuals' abilities—and how it disproportionately affects underrepresented groups, often going unnoticed or unchallenged. Our discussion aims to redefine qualifications in a fair, equitable, and actionable manner. Our guest, Shari Dunn , is an accomplished journalist, former attorney, news anchor, CEO, university professor, and sought-after speaker. She has been recognized as Executive of the Year and a Woman of Influence, with her work appearing in Fortune Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Ad Age, and more. Her new book, Qualified: How Competency Checking and Race Collide at Work , unpacks what it truly means to be deserving and capable—and why systemic barriers, not personal deficits, are often the real problem. Her insights challenge the narratives that hold so many of us back and offer practical solutions for building a more equitable future. Together, we can build workplaces and communities that don’t just reflect the world we live in, but the one we want to create. A world where being qualified is about recognizing the talent and potential that’s been overlooked for far too long. It’s not just about getting a seat at the table—it’s about building an entirely new table, one designed with space for all of us. Brenda Otto is a travel advisor who prides herself on giving her clients an experience of a lifetime. As a longtime entrepreneur, she knows a bit about exceptional customer service and is always available by phone to take care of any questions or concerns that come up while you're traveling. As a frequent traveler herself, Brenda shares some of the reasons she thinks traveling is so important to our overall wellbeing, even after the wedding is long over. Also learn the REAL reasons you want travel insurance (it's more serious than you think) and an insider's secret about planning a destination wedding! If you're questioning why you need a travel advisor when the internet is chock full of DIY travel options, think about how much research Brenda has already done - plus her years of personal travel experience - and you'll realize that she can help you identify exactly the type of honeymoon you and your fiance will enjoy the most. Travel advisors also have relationships with excursion companies and resort staff, so they know exactly what questions to ask and what type of room/location to request. Wedding Tip: Allow yourself plenty of time to plan the honeymoon! After you get the wedding date and venue, start thinking about what you want for a honeymoon. Planning well in advance allows you to have more options to choose exactly what you want instead of settling for what's available. A longer timeframe also gives you time to save money so you can comfortably pay off this bill before you leave. Brenda offers her couples a payment plan option to make life easier. Debbie Brunjes spent decades as a school teacher and principal before coming back to her roots as a flower farmer. She's always loved flowers and has a passion for creating unique and sustainable floral creations for all holidays and events. We chatted about timelines, when brides should choose their florists, and how she likes to tour the wedding venue with the couple to get some design inspiration. She also prides herself with creating a relationship with her couples, which helps enhance the designs because she gets to know them on a personal level. Wedding Tip: Incorporate bits of you and your fiance into the floral bouquet design. Listen closely to Debbie's story about the bride from South Africa. A particular flower from home changed the whole look of her bouquet and made the day more memorable having that touch of home. For this inaugural episode of Hudson Valley Bride, I had the pleasure of chatting with Katie Parent, owner of Service Matters Northeast. Katie was introduced to the hospitality industry as a teenager in a fine dining restaurant and credits that family-owned business for teaching her the importance of great service. Katie learned the ins and outs of hard work by working her way up from a bus girl and observing/learning how the front of house and back of house operate and what makes those systems work smoothly. When this restaurant branched out and started hosting weddings, Katie again worked her way up to a Bridal Assistant where she realized how impeccable service could make or break an event. In 2011 Katie established Service Matters Northeast and continues to implement all those lessons in how she works with engaged couples as well as other wedding vendors. I love her perspective of "collaboration over competition." Wedding Tip: DON'T SETTLE! Katie spoke about seeing couples during Covid restrictions having to "settle" with not having their dream wedding or not having their entire families with them to celebrate. Where there's a will, there's a way...even when you're talking about sticking to a budget. This is where having a wedding professional like Katie can be useful in helping you decide how to you make your tastes fit your lifestyle. Wedding pros are also expert problem solvers! Chances are good that what you see as an insurmountable problem is something Katie and other pros have likely dealt with in the past. Never be afraid to ask questions or allow your vendors to think outside the box to resolve an issue.
