In Mark 10:17-31, a rich young man approaches Jesus with questions about eternal life. This story highlights the positives of his approach – coming at the right time and person, asking the right question, and receiving the right answer from Jesus. The man's longing for eternal life reflects his prosperous means, proper manners, pure morals, and powerful motives. As Jesus observes him, His logic and love are evident, setting the stage for an offer of new life based on keeping the commandments. However, the man's sorrowful departure reveals the loss he faces due to his great possessions. The message clarifies the cost of following Christ, which involves giving back aspects of one's life – time, temple, talent, testimony, and treasure – to the Lord.
