This is a sure tell that you’re having a good time…

Thank you for calling GIH where we instigate growth one call at a time where we utilize antiquated technology to deliver 3-minute leadership lessons every week day! This is message #194 and I am Aaron Havens.

Have you recently been in a conversation that you were looking for a way out?

Yeah, we’ve all been there. Not to be rude, but this person at this time and this topic is boring! Sometimes I can get so excited about a topic that a few minutes into my motor mouth I begin to notice that the person I’m engaged with is starting to fade in interest. Yeah, believe it or not, you could be the person causing the opposite of a Duchenne smile.

A what?!!

A Duchenne smile is a genuine expression of happiness that engages both the mouth and the eyes, leading to the characteristic "crow's feet" at the corners of the eyes. This type of smile is named after 19th-century French neurologist Guillaume Duchenne, who identified the specific facial muscles involved in authentic smiles.

When you find yourself or others having the biggest smile of their life, pay attention! These smiles are a reflection of your authenticity. They are contagious. What excites you? What/who do you love? What makes you smile that big?! Lean into those moment. Notice those moments.

And about the “reading the room” part. Let’s be a people that are self aware enough to notice when we are starting to lose the attention of those around us. Reading faces and body cues are the first signs of engagement or disengagement. As we are all striving for authentic relationships, let’s keep in mind that our bodies can speak louder than our words. Does this come easy for you, or is this something you need to work on?

Here is your homework for today. Take note of the conversations you engage in today. Is the other person excited about what they are saying? Did you notice any HUGE smiles? And what about you… did your face give you away?

Thanks for calling in today. Tune in tomorrow for a fresh new topic. At the sound of the beep what puts the BIGGEST SMILE on your face?
