Would you just let them load the lift?
Thank you for calling GIH where we instigate growth one call at a time where we utilize antiquated technology to deliver 3-minute leadership lessons every week day! This is message #181 and I am Aaron Havens.
Over the weekend our company had a big job that required us to rent a scissor lift to reach some high areas. As I pulled into the rental yard I started laughing. You see, we have rented multiple times from this company and we have a good relationship with them. However, the trailer they were trying to rent to us, let’s just say, we’ve had before and it didn’t go well. On a previous job we learned that this particular trailer has too big of an incline and the lift gets stuck half on and half off when you’re trying to load it. This put us in quite a mess the last time we used this trailer. NOT TODAY BOY! Time to speak up! Time to come up with other solutions. A previous Aaron would have kicked this potential problem down the road and hoped to figure out the solution if we found ourself in the same pickle after the job. So, needless to say this time though, I spoke up, 5 people problem solved, and we ended up with another solution that didn’t require a huge gamble with a less than optimal trailer.
Where in your life are you second guessing if you should speak up? Even when the facts are stacked in your favor. Even when you know what to do or say? Do you speak up, or do you second guess your thoughts or hope the outcome is different than your previously lived experiences?
Sure, I would have figured out what to do if after the big job the lift wasn’t loading. I would have problem solved. What a lot of wasted time and energy to push the problem down the road and hope for a better outcome when in reality the time to solve the problem was on the front end of the job and 5 people were capable of coming up with a more optimal solution.
Today my friend. Trust your gut. Speak your mind. You’re opinion is valid. You’re experience is real. You have the right to express what you’re thinking. Your view is needed. Don’t just hope for better outcomes and sweep the problem under the rug. NO! Today is the day to actually run towards the fire to avoid the house burning down tomorrow. You’ve got this! Today is the day to trust and advocate for yourself.
Thanks for calling in today. Tune in tomorrow for a fresh new topic! At the sound of the beep I’d like to hear of a time you knew what to do, you just didn’t speak up. How did that turn out for you? And if you’re willing to process out loud with me today… I’d like to know, what kept you from speaking up and how can you respond differently in the future?
