So Saul made him a commander over the men of war, an appointment that was welcomed by the people and Saul’s officers alike. 6 When the victorious Israelite army was returning home after David had killed the Philistine, women from all the towns of Israel came out to meet King Saul. They sang and danced for joy with tambourines and cymbals. 7 This was their song: “Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands!” 8 This made Saul very angry. “What’s this?” he said. “They credit David with ten thousands and me with only thousands. Next they’ll be making him their king!” 9 So from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David. 10 The very next day a tormenting spirit from God overwhelmed Saul, and he began to rave in his house like a madman. David was playing the harp, as he did each day. But Saul had a spear in his hand, 11 and he suddenly hurled it at David, intending to pin him to the wall. But David escaped him twice.” 1 Samuel 18:5-11 (NLT) 3 TRAITS OF TOXIC PEOPLE 1. Murderous Spirit “Saul had a spear in his hand, and he suddenly hurled it at David, intending to pin him to the wall.” 1 Samuel 18:10b & 11a (NLT) “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.” John 1:4 (NIV) “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning…” John 8:44 (NLV) 2. Controlling Behavior “From that day on Saul kept David with him and wouldn’t let him return home.” 1 Samuel 18:2 (NLT) “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…” Joshua 24:15 (NIV) “Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.” John 7:17 (NIV) 3. Driven By Hate “Saul… began to rave in his house like a madman.” 1 Samuel 18:10 (NLT) “Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience…Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony.” Colossians 3:12, 14 (NLT) “But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. 9 Don’t lie to each other, for you have stripped off your old sinful nature and all its wicked deeds.” Colossians 3:8-9 (NLT) “When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do.
