Did you know that 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men in the world experience domestic abuse?

Domestic abuse is a type of abuse that happens in an intimate relationship, and often, it’s too hard to recognize them when you’re in that relationship. Abuse comes in many forms such as social, sexual, emotional, financial, physical, and more including instances of homicide.

In episode 97, Genny shared that she was a victim of domestic abuse, and shared her story of how it started, what happened, and, ultimately, how she was able to leave the abuse behind.

Genny spoke about occasionally having to visit Osborne House (now Willow Place) either by herself or with her children. And how being admitted into the Women in Second Stage Housing or WISH program (now Bravestone Centre) gave her and her children a second chance in life.

During one of the group counselling sessions, Genny, along with the 7 other women in the program, received a skeleton key, which they could now use to open any doors, physical or figurative. Genny shared that she’s kept that key on her keychain for the past 34 years as a reminder of her journey to a life free of abuse.

Genny also shared that if you think you are in an abusive relationship, there are signs to watch for and certain feelings you should notice.

If you are or know someone who is experiencing abuse, call the domestic violence crisis line at toll-free 1-877-977-0007 or text 204-792-5302 immediately to get the support you need such as shelter options and free transportation to an emergency shelter. If you are in immediate danger, call 911.
