Clare County Council is being urged not to take one step forward and two steps back as it seeks a solution to a dangerous bridge in Ennis. Droichead na Gabhair Bridge on the Drumcliffe Road has long been considered a danger to pedestrian safety as its width has been deemed unsuitable to cater to both cars and those on foot. Responding to motion on the subject raised by Clarecastle Sinn Féin Councillor Tommy Guilfoyle this week, Ennis Municipal District says the preferred option for the bridge is to create a 3-metre wide shared pedestrian and cyclist path as well as a 3.4-metre wide carriageway on the existing bridge, both of which would be controlled by a signalised yield system. Councillor Guilfoyle however believes a separate pedestrian bridge is the only way forward.
