Happy birthday Foto Ledua in Port Vila!
Coming to you with tons of hanisi from the 180th meridian, in the middle of the Blue continent, where it is a warm 22 degrees Celsius again at 5am this morning.
In Rugby Union: Manu Samoa Head Coach, Mase Mahonri Schwalge has been charged by Samoan Police with multiple offences including "sexual conduct with a person under 16, indecent assault, and common assault,” according to online news portal, Samoa Global News.
"There are two complainants, they are his family members," Samoa's Police Commissioner, Auapaau Logoitino Filipo, was quoted as saying by the news website.
Mase has been released on bail, but he must sign in with police on a weekly basis, until his Court appearance on 4 November.
Schwalge was appointed by Lakapi Samoa in March.
In Rugby League: Michael Maguire has been confirmed and announced as the new Head Coach of the Brisbane Broncos.
But the New South Wales Rugby League Board are upset that Madge and the Broncos must have been working on his contract for at least a week without telling them!
In Football: UEFA Champions League scores from yesterday: Borrusia Dortmund 7-1 Celtic, Barcelona 5-0 Young Boys, Beyer Leverkusen 1-0 AC Milan, Arsenal 2-0 PSG and S Bratislava 0-4 Man City.
Still to play today - Liverpool vs Bologna, Leipzig vs Juventus, Lille vs Real Madrid and Aston Villa vs Bayern Munich.
In Boxing: Having just flown 24 hours from Kazakhstan via Dubai, to defend his IBF World Middleweight title in Sydney tomorrow, Janibek Alimkhanuly has predicted a first round KO of New Zealand challenger, Andrei Mikhailovich:
“I’m not going to play in there. He’s just a regular fighter. We don’t see any dangers in him. Whatever he has, it’s not going to last more than a round," he said.
In SportsBiz: Nike saw a sharp drop in revenue over the three months ended 31 August, according to their latest quarterly earnings report.
The sports apparel and footwear giant generated US$11.6Billion in quarterly revenue, down 10% from the same period 2023.
With quarterly pre-tax earnings of US$1.3B, down 21% year-on-year.
Not surprisingly, Nike’s share price fell 5%.
In the NBA: Congolese-American basketball great Dikembe Mutombo, renowned as one of the best defensive players in NBA history, has died aged 58.
An eight-time NBA all-star, Mutombo passed away surrounded by his family after a battle with brain cancer.
“Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said of the 218cm Hall of Famer in a statement.
“On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in the history of the NBA. Off the floor, he poured his heart and soul into helping others,” Silver added, noting Mutombo’s extensive humanitarian work.
Mutombo, who played 18 seasons in the NBA, worked tirelessly to improve living conditions in his native Democratic Republic of Congo through his personal foundation.
Those efforts, which included donating millions of dollars to help build a hospital on the outskirts of Kinshasa, earned him multiple humanitarian accolades including the US President’s Volunteer Service Award.
Rest in Peace bro.
