October may be over, but we’re still celebrating all things BLACK in this post-Black History Month episode, exploring Black Artistry. This time, the crew are joined by a very special guest and wordsmith extraordinaire, Aniefiok “Neef” Ekpoudom, prolific storyteller of British culture. Together we discuss the landscape of Black art and culture within Britain. Firstly, we consider how we even define and communicate the idea of the “Black Community” in Britain, when there are so many expressions of Black Identity across the UK (7:18) Then, we get into a discussion on how consumers and fellow artists can and should support Black creatives (12:47). And while this is an episode centralising Black artists, we discuss how these artists can transcend Blackness to be recognised for their skill and not just meeting a diversity quota (32:39). We take a look at the liberation of Black music in Britain and explore why this hasn’t expanded to the media of film and TV (43:24) Then, to close us out, Neef shares how he built his career as a full-time creative (1:18:35).
