In today’s episode, I’ll be breaking down burnout. What is it? How can you recognize if you’re heading toward it? And how can you prevent it? It is important to be aware of occupational burnout and how it can affect your physical and mental health.
What is burnout?
If you’re wondering how you can tell if you may be heading toward a burnout, consider these questions from MayoClinic.org…
- Do you lack the energy to be consistently productive?
- Do you find it hard to concentrate?
- Have your sleep habits changed?
- Have you become cynical or critical at work?
- Have you become irritable or impatient with co-workers, customers or clients?
If you don’t address burnout properly, it is only a matter of time before it starts to greatly effect your life and career. Some of the effects come in the form of…
- Insomnia
- Fatigue
- Sadness, anger, or irritability
- Prolonged untreated burnout can lead to more serious health conditions like heart disease or high blood pressure
So let’s talk about how this can be prevented…
- Try to adjust your workload
- Take a vacation
- Seek support from friends, family, co-workers, or again – your doctor or mental health provider
- Focus on getting adequate sleep
- Incorporate some exercise in to your days/weeks
- Practice mindfulness
