Host Jo Reed and AudioFile’s Emily Connelly discuss an audiobook for teens where four narrators in alternating chapters depict intergenerational Filipino sons and fathers over the course of a century. Ramón de Ocampo portrays young Francisco, who left the Philippines and works on California farms in the 1930s. JB Tadena captures angry Emil, whose father Francisco, now an adult, deserts his family to pursue Filipino rights in 1965. Manny Jacinto portrays cowed, bitter Chris in 1985, whose father, Emil, pushes him to assimilate. During the pandemic, Jesse Inocalla reveals sensitive Enzo’s worry about disease and his father’s relationship with Lolo Emil, who moves into their home.
