Welcome to Actuali podcast's Meaning-Making 101 series where we explore crisis of meaning in our world today, and how we may help usher in an awakening from it. Video in this episode: https://youtu.be/rZcbIRP2Z2M?si=zpE_RtJnvHG5Xxxu In this episode, we continue our coverage of Benjamin Boyce's conversation with Jordan Hall, wherein they discuss a potential solution to the meta-crisis (a term for the myriad existential crises facing our species), the cultivation of our inherent capacity to self-transcend. Or as John Vervaeke puts it, an upward spiral to counteract the downward spiral our species finds itself in. In John Vervaeke's "Awakening from the Meaning Crisis," https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLND1JCRq8Vuh3f0P5qjrSdb5eC1ZfZwWJ&si=llqK9TcTCrGa7hrz which we previously covered here, Vervaeke introduces the term "transjective" to describe a relationship with reality that transcends the dualistic, subjective-objective dichotomy. An orientiation to reality, or way of being that allows we as individuals to engage with the world in a more connected and meaningful way. Instead of perceiving things merely as separate subjects or objects, relationships and interactions define existence:: "As we engage in practices that foster reciprocal opening, we enter into a transformative, dynamic relationship with the world, which creates an upward, spiraling movement of meaning." Vervaeke explains that through this process, individuals and the world co-create each other in a transjective manner. He describes how, instead of being trapped in a subject-object dualism, we move towards anagoge—a cognitive ascent ( "Spiral out! Keep going!" ) that integrates the self and reality into deeper layers of connection and meaning. Thanks for listening!
