Maureen Kafkis is a Doctor of Occupational Therapy, the Brain BS™ coach, and the host of The Power of Community & Collaboration Podcast. When she learned that the average human brain has over 60,000 thoughts a day and that most of them are lies (Brain BS™) that cause needless suffering, she started to learn how to separate the fact from fiction in her mind and has never looked back. Maureen truly believes that living consciously, understanding how your brains work, and learning to feel your feelings are necessary for an empowering and fulfilling life. She brings her expertise and extensive knowledge to inspire people in the SB area and beyond to learn how to live consciously, tap into their personal power and become leaders in their community.

In a world where there is so much division and way too much focus on competition, the Brain BS™ Coach is promoting a conscious community and lifestyle built on leadership energy, collaboration, and mutual support. She is doing that because the power of the collective far exceeds anything that can be done at the individual level and it’s just way more fun! If we all consciously collaborate with one another and succeed together we can have a substantial ripple effect that will extend far beyond our local community. Listen and learn how you can add value to your own community!

In this episode I speak with Bee Boeser who is an author, a public speaker, and still a force at the age of 87yo! When Bee realized historians left her husband's name and his work from the historical records of small pox eradication in Africa, she took it upon herself to gather all the information she needed to write a memoir of the time her family spent there and the challenges they faced. The book is called Vaccines & Bayonets: Fighting Small Pox in Africa Amid Tribalism, Terror, and the Cold War. Here are the links to find out more about Bee and to purchase her book. https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/21455675.Bee_Bloeser SAMPLE NEW AUDIOBOOK About my book, speaking, storytelling here: beebloeser.com Speaker, Author of VACCINES & BAYONETS: Fighting Smallpox inAfrica amidTribalism, Terror and the Cold War In listening to the podcast episode, it will become obvious to you that Bee was always meant to through life with Carl and provide him support as the woman behind the man. However, what also becomes quite evident is that Bee is not totally defined by that role because she has also achieved her own accomplishments and has never let her age define her or hold her back. In this episode I share strategies for navigating the frenzy of social media these days. There is so much fear, anger and negativity throughout almost every thread I read. We must learn how to manage our minds effectively so we can stay in leadership energy and have a ripple effect on the people around us. I also talk about a podcast I recently listened to called the Hidden Brain. They did a Wellness Series 2.0 and in it an episode called When It's All to Much. The host, Shankar Vedantam, interviewed an educator and researcher named Sarah Jaquette Ray about the impact of overwhelm, hopelessness, and despair on student's in her class who were learning about climate change from her. I couldn't help but notice the similarity to how many American's are feeling right now about politics. I love what she concluded from her research and will give you a hint that it might have something to do with the name of my podcast:) I'm sharing the link to this episode here. https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/wellness-2-0-when-its-all-too-much/id1028908750?i=1000684745656 We must stop getting so easily triggered and falling into hopelessness and despair about the state of our world. Hello:) I'm so happy to be back after a 6 week break from the podcast and my community work. In this episode I share why I needed the break, why I think leadership energy is so important, and what I want the podcast to focus on moving forward. Oh ya, I also changed the name from The Power of Community & Collaboration in Santa Barbara Podcast to The Power of Community & Collaboration Podcast in order to attract more listeners outside my immediate community who are inspired to step into their leadership energy so they can have a positive ripple effect on the people around them.…

In this episode I explain why I am taking a break from publishing the podcast until February of 2025. I also share a process that I use to evaluate experiences (in this case the year of 2024) that helped me to identify what went wrong, what went well, and what I might do differently next year. This is a great tool for promoting self-awareness that you can use too. Consider it my holiday gift to you! As promised, I am sharing some episodes with you here in the show notes that can hold you over until my return. If none of them resonate, go to my website at www.thebrainbs.com and choose ones that appeal to you from over 220 episodes. Scroll down past the episodes to get the link to this week's episode. This first one is a good one to go to when you get triggered by other people or situations. I share lots of tools in the episode and providers who can help you in the show notes. https://www.thebrainbs.com/podcast/episode/7d01e243/179-making-the-laws-work-for-you-when-you-get-triggered There are a lot of bugs going around, so this one will be handy if a "dramatic" family member gets sick https://www.thebrainbs.com/podcast/episode/77186ec8/181-dealing-with-partners-who-are-dramatic-when-they-get-sick This next one is about how to enjoy family adult time because let's face it, it's not always fun. https://www.thebrainbs.com/podcast/episode/4ca61dbd/48-how-to-enjoy-adult-family-time We do a lot of eating and drinking at the holidays, which can cause us be super critical and consumed with a negative body image. https://www.thebrainbs.com/podcast/episode/798eb472/117-dont-let-brain-bs-about-your-body-ruin-your-freaking-holiday It can also cause us to get critical of our drinking and lead us to make false assumptions. https://www.thebrainbs.com/podcast/episode/79537088/114-troubleshooting-the-brain-bs-around-overdrinking This one is super important because it all begins with our relationships with ourselves. We must make ourselves a priority at times. https://www.thebrainbs.com/podcast/episode/4ad5dcf7/episode-6-most-important-relationship-ever This next one is about understanding exactly what Brain BS is in case you missed that episode. https://www.thebrainbs.com/podcast/episode/79de358b/122-understanding-brain-bs Lastly, this one is about our primary subconscious brain filters which are our lens for how we look at life. Nobody has the same ones, which is why we all disagree so much. In this episode I speak with the lead singer of Billy Nation, which is a Billy Joel Tribute band. I came across Adam Shapiro when he performed with his band at the Lobero. There were a lot of empty seats in the theater and it got me thinking about all the Brain BS that must come with being a performer. So I looked for him after the show and invited him to come on the podcast to be interviewed. It was so fun to talk to Adam because he was willing to be honest and vulnerable. He reminded me how much courage it takes to put yourself out there in the world and just how uncomfortable it can be. So if you are thinking about doing something new, but it's just too scary for you, listen to this episode and see how Adam and I both deal with cultivating a nervous system that can support being seen and heard. In this episode I speak with Tara Wright who I met when I went to serve lunches for the homeless at the FARO Center. In this episode I share with you some tips that will help you to manage your mind and expectations around the holiday season. We have been programmed to believe that the Holiday Season is a wonderful time of year that is full of joy, love, and laughter. The truth is, that's Brain BS™ for many people and that conditioning can cause a great deal of pain. The only way to do that is to get real. The Holidays are a horrible time of the year for many people. There! The secrets out. No need for any of you to keep pretending. When we stop pretending and separate the fact from fiction, we can actually get to work on what is causing the real suffering. In this episode, I speak with Barry Shoer who is the President, CEO and Director of the Sanctuary Centers of Santa Barbara. Barry shares his own personal story of why he has been inspired to devote his life to taking care of the mentally ill . We also discuss how the Sanctuary Centers started and that the stigma attached to mental illness is unfortunately still alive and well today. Barry's body of work over the decades has been extensive, but what most impressed me is how Barry continues to be positive and passionate about his work after all these years. He explains why that is possible and why you might want to consider getting active in our community to take care of the mentally ill too. If you have been complaining about the homeless and/or the mentally ill in SB, listen to this episode to get inspired. Instead of being focused on and frustrated that local or national resources are not improving the situation, you can consider approaching the situation in a more proactive way. Imagine what might be possible if we all stepped into leadership energy and came together to collaborate with and support this population-the ripple effect would be amazing! In this episode I speak with Leticia Trujillo who helps to manage the FARO Center here in Santa Barbara. Leticia has devoted her life to helping non-profits support those less fortunate because she knows they are still valuable members of the community. Listen to this episode to find out how you can support the center. If there is one thing evident to me, the challenge of homelessness is not going to be solved in Washington or any other political arena. The solution lies in community and all of us supporting one another. So instead of fretting over the state of the world and judging the homeless for being less-than, step into leadership energy and become a part of the solution. Let's experiment and see what kind of impact collaboration can have on SB! I am sharing a link to the FARO Center so you can check it out! In this solo episode I share my thoughts and feelings about the outcome of the election. Thank goodness I am in a much better emotional state than I was when Hillary lost. Back then, I was easily triggered and very reactive around anything related to politics. I have evolved since then and I am choosing to approach politics consciously and intentionally moving forward. Whether you are on the winning side or losing side, I want to suggest to you that the two party system may be in need of a revamp. Listen to the episode to see why I feel that way and see what resonates with you. I didn't mention this in the episode, but I will be hosting a gathering at La Lieff Winery on 11/21 from 4-6pm for anybody who wants to process how they are feeling and brainstorm on getting our focus back to the community and away from the circus. It's called Staying in Leadership Energy After the Election. I hope to see you there!…

In this episode I speak with my good friend Alan Cook. I invited Alan to come on the podcast because he is gay and terrified of what is going to happen in the upcoming election. I wanted to see if we could help him to feel a little more empowered by helping him to separate the fact from fiction in his mind, so he can approach politics and elections in a totally different way that can even lead to personal growth. He said it was helpful to him, so maybe it can be for you too. If you are really nervous about the election, you should check this episode out. In this episode, I speak with my friend Bob Malatesta about the term scarcity and how it has impacted his life. Scarcity makes you feel like there is not enough, that you have to compete to get what you want, that there isn't plenty enough pie to go around for everybody. It tends to put you in a self-centered place of fear and wanting to control the people around you, so you can ensure your needs are met. The opposite of scarcity is abundance and we talk about that too. Bob and I met at a Newcomer event and had a brief conversation about scarcity. That conversation changed his life in dramatic ways at the age of 68. It is to his credit that he was able to have such a swift transformation, and it happened because he was so ready to receive the information I had to offer. Bob is proof it's never too late to change your mindset and how it can significantly improve your relationships with yourself and those around you. Enjoy! In this episode, I speak with Stacy McCrory who is a death doula and experienced psycho-therapist. We talk about the Brain BS around death and how choosing to live consciously can improve the way we die for ourselves and the loved ones we leave behind. Stacy shares her personal journey that has led to her most recently focusing on death and grief in her work. The message she is promoting is so important and something we all need to be thinking about. If there is one thing we know for sure, none of us are making it out of here alive. So instead of avoiding the subject of death, we might want to consider slowly beginning to prepare emotionally and mentally for it. Just throwing that out there! That resonated deeply with me and because I am a proactive person who tries to inspire others to step into their leadership energy, I am now doing that in my preparation for death. If you think this is morbid, it's okay. I'll give you an out and let you continue to avoid the inevitable...but you should know by now, thats not how I roll. In this episode, I speak with my good friend Lee Lopez about her experience preparing her only daughter for college, how it was dropping her off, and how she is doing with the empty nest now. I love this episode because Lee is totally honest and transparent about all of the emotions that came up for her. We discuss how Brain BS can impact a relationship between a child and their parents when big milestones and stressful life changes are about to take place. If anybody else would like to come on the podcast to talk about the empty nest or anything else related to your children, I would love the opportunity! Parenting can be very challenging and so can being the son or daughter of a parent who places all their expectations on you... so there is a lot to discuss! I would really like to talk to somebody who is estranged from a parent or a child so we can explore all the Brain BS that comes up with that. You can count on me to have your back and provide a safe space where you can feel emotionally safe to share with me. I also want to add that I would never publish a podcast if somebody's nervous system could not handle being seen and heard in such a vulnerable way. I commit to that because I think the more we talk about all of this, the more we realize we are all so much more alike than different. You might think you are the only one who is having issues with your relationships, but I promise you that is Brain BS! In this episode I share with you why leadership energy is so important and the positive ripple effect it can have when you are living in it. The reason why I wanted to do this is because I sometimes think people believe that leadership energy comes from a role assigned to them and applies to a certain group following them. I am suggesting that leadership energy is within us and always accessible whenever we choose to tap into it, and the whole world can benefit from it when we choose to do that. I am publishing the episode a day early this week, because I am hosting a local and free event tomorrow (Wed) evening at La Lieff Winery called Step Into Your Leadership Energy in Preparation for the Upcoming Election. Here is the link if you want to check it out. https://www.thebrainbs.com/event-details/step-into-your-leadership-energy-in-preparation-for-the-upcoming-election I wanted to give people a heads up about it in case they wanna join me and other like-minded people who want to take back their personal power and live in a unified nation where we respect and accept one another even if we have different beliefs. Otherwise, we believe we are the mercy of what is going on around us and that can be discouraging and disempowering. If you really want to know how to make a difference in the world, start paying attention to what I am teaching about learning to live consciously.
