Why is Europe not cold like Canada? ❄️ If we're not careful, it might be, sooner than we'd like, all because of AMOC. It's very real and quite scary.

In this episode, Max and Tony discuss the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a vital ocean current that helps regulate the climate of northern Europe by transporting warm water from the South Atlantic to the North Atlantic. The AMOC is slowing down due to factors like freshwater from melting ice sheets, which could eventually lead to the collapse of this system. If AMOC stops, northern Europe could experience a drastic temperature drop, similar to that of Canada, causing widespread environmental and societal changes, including massive migrations and a surge in energy demands. Max and Tony explore the urgency of addressing climate change, emphasising the technologies and solutions available but hindered by political will. They discuss the risks of climate collapse, drawing parallels to past environmental shifts, and highlight the role of behavioural science in solving the crisis.

The conversation is both sobering and hopeful, with a focus on what can be done to mitigate the worst outcomes for you. They also cover what can be done about it, and why there's still hope.

Oceanographer Stefan Rahmstorf explains why Amoc breakdown could be catastrophic for both humans and marine life.

In this episode, Max and Tony dive into the history and complexities of natural gas. They discuss how gas, once seen as a byproduct to be flared off, became a crucial energy source that transformed the energy landscape. From the early days of coal gas to the shift to cleaner North Sea gas in the 70s, they explore the engineering marvels that made gas widespread across the UK. They also address the current challenges, including the rise of global gas markets, methane emissions, and the environmental impact of gas consumption. Amid the debate over the future of gas, they reflect on its efficiency and how it keeps us warm today—while also considering its role in the climate crisis. Max and Tony debate the role of biomass energy, specifically wood burning, as an alternative to coal. Max defends biomass as a transitional solution until cleaner energy sources like solar and nuclear are more viable, while Tony warns about its environmental impact and long-term effects. They discuss the pros and cons of biomass, the food vs. fuel dilemma, and explore alternatives like solar. Though they don’t fully agree, both recognise biomass has a place in the short term. We've got electric cars, electric trains, but what about electric planes? Max and Tony clash this week on the future of air travel. Should we take a step back and slow travel down? Or is that not feasible in this day and age? What solutions are there? If any? They do agree that long-distance travel needs new solutions, even if they’re unconventional. In this episode, we dive deep into the world of nuclear energy and explore the question: why don’t we have more nuclear power stations in the UK? We’ll unpack the challenges and complexities that have led to the relatively slow growth of nuclear power in the UK, despite its potential to provide clean, reliable energy. Is it too dangerous, or have we just been too cautious? Could nuclear power be the answer to the country’s energy needs and the climate crisis? Subscribe to the 10-Second Climate newsletter.
