STORY 1: State tax revenues declined in October
Georgia's tax collections decreased by 3.4% in October compared to the previous year, totaling $2.53 billion, a drop of $89.7 million. This decline is partly due to an extended tax filing deadline following Hurricane Helene, pushing deadlines to May 1. Individual income tax revenue fell by 8.7%, largely due to a 36.5% drop in tax return payments. Net sales tax receipts decreased by 1%, while corporate income taxes saw a significant 47.4% decline, with reduced payments and increased refunds.
STORY 2: GCPS names finalists for Teacher of the Year
Gwinnett County Public Schools announced six finalists for Teacher of the Year from 25 semifinalists. The finalists are Amber Melander (Patrick Elementary), Katie Lessard (Puckett’s Mill Elementary), Abby Paul (Berkmar Middle), Sharese Colbert (Radloff Middle), Nakaya Manning (Central Gwinnett High), and Mia Johnson (Shiloh High). Each finalist exemplifies dedication to education, focusing on student engagement, equity, and leadership. The district's TOTY program aligns with state and national programs, with the winner serving from July 2025 to June 2026. The top teacher will be announced at a celebration on January 30.

STORY 4: Suspect in murder of Georgia nursing student Laken Riley waives right to jury trial
The undocumented migrant accused of murdering Georgia nursing student Laken Riley waived his right to a jury trial, opting for a bench trial starting Friday. Riley, a 22-year-old student, was found dead on February 22 near the University of Georgia campus, with her death ruled as asphyxiation and blunt force trauma. Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including murder and assault. Prosecutors seek life without parole. Ibarra, who pleaded not guilty, remains in custody.
