How the beauty of handmade, Indigenous communities and descaling are an opportunity for evolution
Manage episode 367736175 series 3295174
In this very special episode Emma interviews Kavita Parmar co-founder of XTANT. We explore Kavita's life story, her personal realisations and learnings through her journey with heritage textiles and artisans and why the world needs to stop and urgently listen and learn from Indigenous communities and wisdom. We discuss the disconnect that has occurred from industrialisation and capitalism and its impact on humanity and nature. Yet amongst all of this is an exciting opportunity for evolution. To stop thinking large scale - instead descale and have local industries with regenerative cultures. And to exchange and learn from other parts of the world that are connected to and understand that we are all part of a living system - whose relationships within their community, nature and animals are interconnected. And the work that XTANT is doing and building amongst their growing community to seduce people with the beauty of handmade and going against the grain.

About XTANT:
XTANT renewed itself with our fourth annual edition from the 9th to 13th of May 2023 which was truly magical.
Like its previous iterations each year's XTANT has a leitmotif, this year it was ‘Fibra’ for its unique focus on the core, central and most atomic form of textile, The event took over several heritage patios, all walking distance from each other at the very heart of the historic and beautiful streets of Palma de Mallorca. A true celebration of the art in heritage textile craft.
XTANT aims to inspire the new generations to value sustainability, personal identity, tradition and responsible consumption over commercial tendencies based on unbridled consumption. The event offers many moments of reflection and communion with the unique, the beautiful and the long-lasting. Full of enriching conversations, workshops, rituals and textile exhibitions with over 65 master Artisans / activists / designers invited from 23 countries, XTANT| 2023 was a resounding success. Here is one of the keynote speeches by Satish Kumar that beautifully illustrates all the XTANT community values.
