Anthony De Marinis is a certified professional trainer (CDBC, ADT, LFDM, FFCP), Certified Dog Behavior Consultant- IAABC, Accredited Dog Trainer- IAABC, Licensed Family Dog Mediator, Fear Free Certified Animal Trainer and one of the nicest guys in our awesome industry. Dr Emily Lucas owns and operates The Whole Hound, a unique service in Sydney because she is both a vet and a trainer. Emily is someone that I feel lucky to consider a colleague in this industry, her wealth of knowledge on dogs, dog training and medicine is astounding. In this episode we talk about behaviour medication. An often controversial topic that we thought we'd make even spicier by asking the question "Why Would We Resort to Medication Before Resorting to Punsihment to Change Behaviour?" I'll leave that teaser there because this is a topic full of nuance and something we all care deeply about. Dominique Hone of Canine Caregivers joins me again for another Canine Caregivers episode. In this episode we discuss "Reactivity Week". The joys of pre-recording an episode and it getting released no where near the actual week we probably should have released it... but that doesn't take away from the fact that this is an important topic and what we covered in this episode can support so many people that hear it. Dominique Hone of Canine Caregivers joins me again for another Canine Caregivers episode. In this episode we discuss "The Bridge of Trust". The bridge of trust is a concept that Dominque talks a lot about with her clients. It is what strengthens the bond and communication between both ends of the leash and ultimately is at the core of the relationship. Trust is earned and listening to Dom break this down is a great insight into how important it is as well as some classic do's and don't when it comes to building trust. Hannah Branigan is someone that I have personally learned a lot from. I have listed to every single episode of her awesome podcast "Drinking From the Toilet" which is a fascinating deep dive into the use of postive reinforcement in a variety of contexts. It's also a really cool show because over time, you really feel like you're getting to know Hannah which in my opinion, everyone is better off for doing so. Hannah is fascinated by behavior and learning, and passionate about bringing innovative, science-based solutions to the dog/human learning space. Hannah has a background in both human sports and biology. Now she applies that knowledge and experience to the world of animal training and canine competitive sports. Hannah not only trains people and professionals she also enjoys competing in a variety of sports, and has titled her dogs in Obedience, Agility, Conformation, IPO (Schutzhund), and Rally. Her competition obedience DVDs, Obedience FUNdamentals and Beyond FUNdamentals, have received rave reviews from trainers all over the world, and her students have earned advanced titles and in multiple countries. While primarily interested in the training process, she finds the high scores, prestigious awards, and national rankings she has earned to be very reinforcing. Hannah is the host of the popular dog training podcast, Drinking from the Toilet, which focuses on the (often inconvenient) intersection between positive reinforcement philosophy and reality. Jill Hassevort is a Certified Training Partner through Karen Pryor Academy and holds a BA from the University of Michigan. It was during her time at U of M that she spent a summer living with a dog (named Jack) for the first time ever. Her time with him led her to understand how amazing dogs are as a species. Later, Jill adopted a dog, an American Staffordshire Terrier, also named Jack! It was her desire to dispel the myths about his breed and provide him with the best life possible that led her to learn more about dog training and how dogs learn – bringing her to where she is today. Before making the career change to dog training, Jill taught high school Spanish. Her experience in the classroom gives her the teaching skills that she employs when working with clients. Her combination of top-notch education and real-world experience makes her the trainer you and your dog want in your corner. Dominique Hone of Canine Caregivers joins me again for another Canine Caregivers episode. In this episode we discuss "Can You Reward Fear?". When people are discussing how to handle unwanted behaviours, too often we hear people and even some misguided professionals give the advice... "Don't do that to them then, you'll reward the behaviour and make them want to feel scared again". Which just DOES NOT MAKE ANY SENSE!! It is impossible to use any amount of positive reinforcement to make another individual WANT to feel a negative emotional state again! If I've had a bad day at work and my amazing wife gave me a beer when I got home because I was moping around and feeling angry, it would increase the likelihood of me wanting to come home feeling angry and behaving that way again. So, it's impossible to reward fear... but does that mean we need to start being permissive of fearful behaviours? Is that the solution? This topic is layered, so we unpack this all in this episode! Tune in! There are some skills that just make life easier and being able to buy ourselves time is something that I think we would all love to be able to do more easily. One thing that I see people consistently struggling with their dogs is that they often feel rushed by their dog. But it really doesn't have to be this way. Now of course if our dogs NEED something, then we should move at their pace. Plus there are times that we're just normal people doing normal things and we're going to give our dogs things simply because they indicated they wanted it.... and that's not a problem in most normal circumstances. But a skill that I recommend people practicing with their dogs, no matter what age but the earlier the better is to practice waiting when asked. It could be for simple life rewards such as getting to 'go' once they've waited by your door as you've brought the shopping in and out. It could be while we put their leash on so that we're not scrambling around teaching them that they can outrun us. The skill of being able to go 'wait' there until it's clear to move again has to be used carefully, not to trap and not to bully, but when practiced well can be one of the best skills we teach them. It can be for their safety or our sanity. Dominique Hone of Canine Caregivers joins me again for another Canine Caregivers episode. In this episode we discuss "The Expactations People Put on Their Dogs". We often find that when our dogs cognition, age, species and not to mention the social norms, barriers and freedoms that are in the way that what should be expected from the dog and what is being asked are drastically out of sync. So much of our job as behaviour consultants can be about setting realistic expectations. Too many people think that behaviour can just be 'fixed'. There are still cowboy professionals out there making it harder for everyone actually doing great work by offerring 'guarantees' on behaviour and other shady marketting and sales techniques to win clients over. We dive into this hot topic and we'd love to know what you think. We've even set up a new Facebook group, so jump in and say hello: https://www.facebook.com/groups/unhingedandunleashed/ If you want to learn more about Canine Caregivers, a platform in which we provide courses and webinars on how to live a healthy and happy life with your dog, visit caninecaregivers.com.au because we've got a ton of resources available. Having worked in this industry for many many years now I can confidently say that when it comes to general goals that people have got consistently wrong with their dogs over the years is that they prioritise obedient behaviour over healthy emotional regulation. Obedience is one of those words that I automatically cringe at anyway. The thought of anyone being obedient to me makes me automatically think that this is an unhealthy one side relationship that I would need to reconsider how I communicate with that individual. But the big thing that I think people don't recognise is that so many unwanted behaviours our dogs display comes down to emotional dysregulation. If they get stressed, frustrated, anxious, fearful, angry or any other emotion then their behaviour is a reflection of this. If we aim for healthy emotional regualtion in our day to day lives and training plans with our dogs then not only will we see fewer unwanted behaviours in the first place but we will also have happier dogs and healthier relationships because our understanding and empathy towards our dogs will only increase as we look at things through their lens. This is at the core of my work with dogs and their caregivers, so take a listen to learn more why it's so important in more detail. You can find out more at; mutleypro.com bondibehaviourist.com caninecaregivers.com.au We've even set up a new Facebook group so that you can reach out to Ian and sometimes even the guests. Dominique Hone of Canine Caregivers joins me again for another Canine Caregivers episode. In this episode we discuss "Do Dogs Need a Job?". This is something that a lot of people and professionals push! They'll blame unwanted behaviours on the dog not having a job, they'll blame hyperarousal on not having a job. But what does giving them a job even mean? Is it the cure to unwanted behaviours? So many of our dogs were bred for working purposes but aren't living these lives any more in this modern world, so what does giving them a job look like to the average pet guardian? Is it even relevant to our dogs? Tune into the episode to learn more. Dominique Hone of Canine Caregivers joins me again for another Canine Caregivers episode. In this episode we discuss "Management Isn't Cheating". First of all, I'll explain that when we're talking about management here, we're talking about the use of baby gates, not going to the park when we know that dog our dog doesn't like will be there, closing the door to the balcony so they don't bark - that kinda thing. This type of managment often gets a bad wrap. People feeling judged that 'they didn't train their dog - they just managed it'. These feelings are not helpful and often we forget that when it comes to our own life, we manage a lot of our own shit rather than fully addressing it. If it's good enough for us, then it can be good enough for our own dogs. As ever, I won't spoil it by giving away the answers here. So... Bobbie Bhambree (CDBC, CPDT-KA) is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant at Behavior Vets. She is also a faculty member of CATCH Canine Trainers Academy and Agility University. Bobbie started her career in 2003 as a pet behavior counselor with the ASPCA Animal Behavior Center. Bobbie works as part of the Behavior Vets team and is a presenter on the Resilience Rainbow tour, educating caregivers and professionals on what resilience is, how to build and of course, why. So, when Bobbie talks about reslience in our dogs, I listen. Resilience is one of these topics that's quite fashionable for dog trainers to talk about lately, but in my opinion it is about time. I have spoken a lot in the past about the importance of emotional stability, and resilience is a huge component of that. So, listen in and let us know what you think. Dr Findy Wills started as a small animal veterinarian in Newcastle after graduating from the University of Sydney with first class honours. She has been servicing the area for the past 14 years. She is currently based in Central Coast and is enjoying everything the region has to offer. During her time as a small animal clinician, she found her clients were often in need of answers for their pets' behaviour problems. Seeing first-hand the end result of untreated mental health disorders in animals sparked her commitment to further her studies in animal behaviour with the University of Edinburgh, UK in 2017. She currently holds a Masters degree in Clinical Animal Behaviour and has a particular interest in human-animal relationships and trauma-informed care. ollow the links below to learn more and to learn more about the show itself. Dominique Hone of Canine Caregivers joins me again for another Canine Caregivers episode. In this episode we discuss "Should We Give Our Dogs Bones?" Somehow, this topic seems to have been so discussed and over thought that it's become a messy topic and you'll get a different opinion from most people you ask. So, we unpack it and highlight the considerations to make when choosing whether or not to give your dog a bone. As ever, I won't spoil it by giving away the answers here. So... A consisten goal when working with dogs is to achieve a high level of emotional health. Whether we're working with a puppy, a dog in the home or out in the wide world we are always striving for the dogs in our care to be as emotionally stable as possible. I will always prioritise this over obedience because if we have a dog that is feeling safe, settled and comfortable then more often than not we don't see undesirable behaviours in the first place and it is our baseline anyway for which we start to teach new skills on.
