Those who take on the most difficult jobs often face the most scrutiny, usually because those jobs are for the public service. Teachers, nurses, police officers. If the community pays your wages, you can expect to get grief, and with the advent of social media, it has only become easier to criticise. It has also become easier to identify, and scrutinise, those instances where power has been used inappropriately. In this climate, it has become harder and harder to pick out the actual problems. Post anything about the police online in recent weeks and the comment section becomes awash with vitriol directed at law enforcement. Is this tidal wave of criticism reflective of a service crippled with corruption or is it the amplification of a handful of issues that are in fact being dealt with? Is it somewhere in the middle? That’s the problem. If you take social media at face value, it’s hard to know. Upholding the law is essential to a community, and when that trust is eroded, everything looks suspicious. Police officers are granted powers the general public don’t have. The power to arrest, the power to remove liberty. It's only right that the magnifying glass is held closer over them, but by who? And to what extent? Express spoke to Guernsey's Head of Law Enforcment, Ruari Hardy, to better understand the criticism the force is currently facing, whether it’s warranted, and what is being done to build public support in one of our most important institutions. ★ Support this podcast ★…

It was once claimed that the medicinal cannabis industry would be a massive economic enabler for Guernsey, that it would revitalise the growing industry and see the Bailiwick lead the way in cannabis regulation. That hasn't happened yet, and as mainland Europe starts to relax its laws surrounding recreational cannabis, it could never happen. The issues surrounding regulation are complicated. Some argue that it should be fully legalised, regulated and taxed. Some adamantly stand by it's classification as an illicit substance that should never be used recreationally. Who is right? To get a better understanding of the situation Express spoke to Gary Tucker from the House of Green. He's seen the evolution of the cannabis market first hand in the United States, developing from a black market commodity to the multi-billion pound industry it is now. ★ Support this podcast ★…
Around one in 15 crimes reported to the police in Jersey is linked to domestic abuse and while the law already covers some of the behaviour associated with abuse in the home, such as assault and criminal damage - it doesn't recognise the longstanding coercion, control and other patterns that may form domestic abuse. That's set to change this week when the States debate a specific Domestic Abuse Law. But how difficult will it be to take action against acts that often take place behind closed doors between those whose lives are often tightly interwoven? ★ Support this podcast ★…

The quality of food is only as good as the soil it grows in, and for decades the Earth's black gold has been degenerated through intensive farming practices. But Jock Pettitt, a self-proclaimed soil farmer, believes the mainstream methods of farming are not inevitable, promoting instead small-scale, widespread, and community centred organic farming. Along with aerosol dispersal, self-isolation and the alcohol content of hand sanitiser, a Vaccine Passport is yet another concept which covid has forced us to get our heads round in the last 12 months. As well as the obvious health issues caused by the virus, it has also challenged us to reconsider how much we value our freedom.....and what we will accept being removed or suspended. This is a year when we have all accepted being ordered to stay at home for most of each day, wearing a face mask to go shopping and not seeing loved ones for months on end. Will we also accept being compelled to have a particular medical procedure - a vaccine - if we want to do something, like travel without needing to isolate? Exactly what is meant by a vaccine passport is still unclear, but already the government is under a lot of pressure to make travel easier - by removing some of the restrictions they have imposed - for those who have had the vaccine. ★ Support this podcast ★…
