Imani Ellis has always believed community is a superpower. What began as a small gathering in her Harlem apartment grew into The Creative Collective NYC and CultureCon — one of the largest conferences celebrating creators of color. But behind the highlight reels and celebrity speakers, Imani’s journey has been defined by burnout, bold leaps and learning when to pause. In this episode, Ben and Kathleen sit down with Imani and explore what it takes to transform a passion project into a cultural movement. From balancing a demanding career at NBCUniversal with late-night CultureCon planning, to walking away from work at the height of burnout for a self-designed “creative residency” in Paris, Imani shares the realities of leadership, rest and why joy and community must stay at the center of her work. Send us a text It's coming... like a runaway train the 2024 election is heading towards us at speed and there's a lot of anxious people out there and in here. Join me as I think about the possible scenarios of either outcome and consider the different aspects of our current political moment. I hope you enjoy the episode. Send us a text It's March, 2024 and the presidential election has officially kicked off with only 1 candidate from each major political party. Once again, Joe Biden and Donald Trump are on the ballot and America is super bummed out about it. The thing is, it's a really close race even though one of the candidates is a malignant narcissist and an indicted co-conspirator in a plot to overturn democratic government. The current wisdom is that the public isn't tuned in and that people don't remember what Trump was like as a leader. So, I'm providing a bit of a reminder. I've done a contrast of the candidates, reviewed the Trump agenda for a 2nd term, and provided an overview of his criminal and civil cases. I hope you'll listen and I hope you'll please share it with anyone you know who might not have made up their mind. If you'd like to contact me with questions or comments - no threats or overtly mean comments please - I invite you to reach out to my email: suzimakesapodcast@gmail.com or you can find me on Instagram @suzimakesapodcast.…
Send us a text Education is a topic very close to my heart and I have so many thoughts about it. In this episode, I'm taking a bird's eye view to education in America to understand how it evolved and how it impacts its citizens. Enjoy! Send us a text The Deep State! What is it? There's an awful lot of chatter about it within the Republican party and especially from the former President. Whatever it is, it's really bad and you should be afraid of it! That's the idea, apparently. Well, I've got some thoughts about that and I've put them here like a tiny little terrarium of succulent ideas. Enjoy!…
Send us a text My son, Wyatt was kind enough to sit down with me to do an interview. He's 10 years old and starting 5th grade. I think he's a great conversationalist and I hope you enjoy our discussion.
Send us a text Propaganda! It's everywhere. We all know it. We all see it. So much so that we've become a little casual about its potential effects in our society. In this episode, I'm talking about propaganda... obviously? What is it? Why is it? And what does it do to us as a culture? I hope you enjoy it!…
Send us a text Here's a little one addressing my thoughts on the recent announcement of the indictment of the former President. As the pebble that precedes the avalanche, we're getting a good preview of things to come. Nothing like this has ever happened in our history and the ways that people deal with it will be both unpredictable and scary. Let's talk about it... it's all gonna be okay.…
Send us a text Justice is an elusive concept that humans seek as part of our every day lives. It's complex and messy just like everything else about humanity. In this series of episodes, I'm exploring ideas about justice and how they shape American ideas of society, law and order, and equity. In Part 1, I'm talking about broad concepts of justice and looking at some specific historical examples of justice that have informed current day thinking.…
Send us a text In this part of a series on justice, I'm taking a close look at J. Edgar Hoover. Serves him right. He spent his whole life doing that to others without their knowledge or consent!
Send us a text In this final episode on justice, I'm talking a bit about justice in the modern day and some different thinkers and ideas about justice. Some of those people's ideas have influenced me and I think they are all voices worth paying attention to. Here are some examples: Kimberly Crenshaw - Critical Race Theory: The Key Writings That Formed the Theory Nikole Hannah-Jones - The 1619 Project Ta-Nehisi Coates - We Were 8 Years In Power: An American Tragedy Olufhemi O Taiwo: Reconsidering Reparations…
Send us a text The Media... we all talk about it like it's some kind of living entity that plops around and forces its girth upon us in unpleasant ways. Yet, it is but a collection of messages that are submitted to our sensory holes in inundating ways. How do we process all of this information and especially in a world so connected by information? In this episode, I explore the epistemic processes that we use to formulate belief and why those processes drive us to compartmentalize information in the most practical of ways. Join me to hear about how those processes manifest themselves in our lives and our culture to emerge into the thing we call the Media.…
Send us a text How did the Media come to be in America? Who were its makers and how did the American people come to embrace it and to shape it? Interesting questions that are easy to ignore because, let's face it, we've all got things to do. But it's central to our lives in really important ways. In this episode I examine some of the pioneers of publishing and news reporting in its early years and the people who helped to set it along the path where we find ourselves today. One important person of interest is William Randolph Hearst who's whole family story is almost too weird and too American to be believed. Join me! Let's celebrate the drama of glorious American stupidity together!…
Send us a text Journalism has been at the heart of American society from its earliest days. The success of self governance relies on an informed electorate and that is the reason why the press and freedom of the press is called out very specifically in the constitution. In this final episode of the series on Media & Journalism, I'm exploring Journalism's seat within the framework of The Media, how and why it remains an important function in our country and some examples of how it has actually shaped public policy in addition to public opinion. I hope you enjoy it!…
Send us a text It's been a while since I've posted anything and there's a lot of stuff that's been floating around in my brain. The 2022 Midterm Elections are coming up and there's a ton of political noise in the air right now. The US Supreme Court is up to its quiet shenanigans again on the shadow docket and there are a few cases that are worth talking about. In this first part, I'm talking about the 2022 midterms and some of the issues on the ballot for me and why this election is one I think is really worth taking the time to understand and participate in. I hope you enjoy it!…
Send us a text It's Part 2! In which I talk about the Supreme Court Shadow Docket as a general mechanism. Also, a brief discussion of the Moore vs. Harper case the relates to gerrymandered redistricting maps and a kooky theory that endows disproportionate power to a select group of legislators. Weee! Also, a fun story about the most wacky court case in recent memory and the subsequent death of a website: Gawker.com…
Send us a text The 3rd and final part in which I discuss a SCOTUS case relating to Affirmative Action. Also, some interesting tidbits about U.S. Immigration policy. Totally awesome.
Send us a text Free speech is a pillar of American identity and I'm talking about speech in that context in these episodes. In Part 1, I'm discussing the ideas of constitutionally protected speech and how those manifest in individual behaviors and the resulting social consciousness. These episodes are sloppy and I'm sorry about that. I really wanted to get them out there after a period of busy-ness that prevented me from working much on the pod. In spite of all that, I hope you enjoy them!…
Send us a text In Part 2 of a discussion of speech, I'm looking at a number of legal cases that have shaped the path of our modern understanding of speech in all its forms. You'll enjoy my son's loud mouth while he was playing games in the other room! It adds a terrific amateurish quality that I'm sure you'll appreciate. ;-) Enjoy!…
Send us a text Part 3, the final part of the episodes on speech is a messy melange of different examples of speech within the framework of American expression. Trigger Warning: I'm talking quite a bit about January 6th and the insurrection at the Capitol, so if that's not something you want to hear about, you've been warned. :)…
Send us a text What's the deal with cults? Well, I would argue that cults represent a distilled version of basic human psychology distorted into a manufactured framework. It's easy to slip into and difficult to get out of. Any person is susceptible to being pulled into a cult. Why? How does it happen? How does it affect us? I'm talking about it in this episode. I hope you'll join me!…
Send us a text After having looked carefully at the common features of cults, I'm diving into how those same features and principles show up in every day society and culture. How do extremist ideas wind their way into our lives, into our laws, and into our societal ideals? It's everywhere, look around. Or, just listen in and I'll tell you more!…
Send us a text This episode is a little bit of a departure from my usual format of looking at broad issues through a historical context. Instead, I'm talking about 3 major things happening in the world right now. There are more than 3 major, huge global issues happening but I'm only looking at 3 of them: The war in Ukraine, the confirmation of Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court, and recent developments from the House Special Committee on the January 6th Insurrection. So much stuff! Happening all at once! I'm dizzy! Come and listen to me careen around trying to find my balance. Admit it, you think it's funny when people stumble around. This is basically a verbal version of that. Enjoy!…
Send us a text In this episode, I'm navel gazing on the idea of work and its distinction from labor. I meander through the history of labor and its evolution from slavery and feudalist foundations. Come along and let's think about work in American culture! It's crazy!
Send us a text The Industrial Revolution! It had dramatic and lasting effects on labor movements. What was the deal with the Industrial Age and how did it feature in American culture? How did it bring about the formation of labor unions and how did those organizations think of themselves? So many questions! Listen in! I've got plenty of thoughts about it.…
Send us a text Socialism, Communism, and Capitalism! Oh my! How did these structures influence work in America? The 20th century was a cauldron of political evolution and work and labor was a central piece of it. In this episode I'm considering these questions and pondering the future of work in America. Join me!…
Send us a text In this episode, I'm changing it up to talk about something a lot more fun... comic books! I have a deep love in my heart for comic books and the characters and stories they've inspired. In Part 1, I'm talking about how I came to discover them, how they affected me and the material that sparked my life long love of the medium. I hope you enjoy it! If you have any thoughts you'd like to share, reach out to me by email at suzimakesapodcast@gmail.com or you can find me on Instagram (@suzimakesapodcast).…
