2020 is almost here, so we felt it'd be nice to take some time and reflect on all that God has done in our lives over the past year. We picked a few questions - some light-hearted, some reflective and took turns giving our answers through sniffles, and in-between sips of apple cider vinegar tea, because #coldseason.…
Sunday Afternoons UNCUT. In this week’s episode, we dive into the “hot button” topics of Christianity. Those topics that you avoid bringing up and that somewhat make you cringe. We stir the pot a little and step on several soapboxes, but hopefully not too many toes, by talking about things that we feel are important to wrestle with. The premise: answer the question, “Should Christians ________?” Five different questions each answered with a “four-ish” minute timer, and our completely biased opinion. By no means are we intending to throw stones or be judgmental - this is not your mother’s Facebook comment section. Our hope is that through our unfiltered, passion you would hear two women who have wrestled with things that we are faced with in society, as we all try to balance what it looks like to be “in the world, but not of the world.” There is no hidden agenda and our findings are not meant to be taken at face value. Please hear our hearts, we are not trying to make any judgment calls on anyone’s salvation - we’re not that good, promise. Our hope is that if you feel strongly, or feel anything about our answers that you would bring them before The Lord and allow Him to speak into them, and speak His love over you. Once you’ve done that, feel free to come back here for a healthy debate. But please, don’t get us started on Santa. We’ll be here all day.…
Worship While You Wait What are you waiting for? Are you waiting for healing? For God to show up in your family life and turn things around? Are you waiting for someone to recognize your talent and confirm your calling? Are you waiting for a husband? A wife? Are you waiting for the pain of heartbreak to make sense? Are you waiting for Friday because you absolutely hate your job? At some point, if you’re not now, we are all going to go through seasons of waiting. This week, Jillana digs in on how we can wait well and with purpose.…
Why is it so difficult to talk about Jesus in the workplace - or in any place we’re in for that matter? Why do we beat around the bush when it comes to mentioning anything about our faith to our coworkers? Sometimes it can feel like we’re living a double life. Hallelujahs on Sundays and then hiding Mondays through Saturdays. In this solo episode, Jennifer dives into the challenges of witnessing in the workplace and practical ways to overcome our excuses so that we can actually make a positive impact and point our coworkers to Christ.…
Holy Spirit You are Welcome Here? The Bible has a lot to say about the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives, but we found that The Holy Spirit is the member of the trinity that seems to invoke the most mystery in the hearts and minds of Christians today. We admit that there have been times where we treated "the gift " that was given to us at salvation more like an unwelcome house guest, just meant to convict and challenge rather than our ever-present help in times of trouble. What is the significance of The Holy Spirit? Why is it that some Christians have a hard time talking about and acknowledging His role and presence in our lives? In this episode we start a conversation on how we viewed the Holy Spirit growing up, and what we're discovering about Him now.…
As Christians, we are called to live a life walking by The Spirit, and follow Christ. What does following Christ look like in our dating life? In part two of our conversation on "The One" where we take a look at your comments and friends' opinions on whether or not they think "The One" is a thing. Do you believe in soulmates? How about “true love?” In this two-part episode, we start the conversation on if whether or not there is only one person you could end up with in a marriage relationship, or if you could make any relationship work as long as the other person loves the Lord. And what about physical attraction – does that truly matter in romantic relationships? We honestly love this conversation and are excited to discover some biblical truths to help us navigate and come to a conclusion. This has been an awesome conversation starter in real life and we have answers from so many people to share as we continue to dig in!…
Misunderstandings are a regular part of relationships - how you handle them is what will make or break your friend, romantic and family interactions. Why are we so afraid to face conflict when it’s such a normal part of our lives? How has “confrontation” become a dirty word? In this episode we discuss our own fears with facing conflict, why we feel like it’s so difficult, and how to approach it in a god-honoring, totally not scary way. Follow us on Social Media! Is self-care more than bubble baths and pedicures? In this episode we break down what it looks like to take care of yourself while taking care of others. We realized that the world perpetuates conflicting ideas by telling us to “live your best life” and “do you,” while also telling us to find your #positivevibetribe and to attain the ultimate #squadgoals . Is there something to making sure we are in a healthy state in order to live out the call that Jesus placed on us by telling us to go out and make disciples? Did Jesus practice self-care? As Christians, how do we practice self-care without being selfish? Follow us on Social Media! Facebook Instagram: @sundayafternoonpodcast @getfitwjen @jillanajones…
Sunday Afternoons is BACK! We're so excited to kick off this season by talking about a topic that is relatively new to us - fasting and prayer. In this episode, we discuss what it looks like to fast and pray and why it is still an important spiritual discipline in our time. We share our personal experiences with it, how we've succeeded, and how we're still working it out. Fasting can feel as old-school as gladiator sandals, but is still a very relevant practice as followers of Christ. Don't forget to leave us a review and follow us on social media! And that’s a wrap for Season One! We have been soooo blessed to have you with us as our listeners on this journey through Season One. We never imagined that turning The Sunday Afternoon blog into a podcast would be equally rewarding as it is spiritually and emotionally challenging. In this finale episode, we reflect on past episodes, share which were our favs, and confess the expectations versus realities of starting and keeping up a podcast. So, from the bottom of our hearts – THANK YOU. And we’ll see ya in late summer/early fall!…
In this episode we continue the conversation of examining our thought lives, by taking a good look at what we're putting in there ourselves. Living with the freedom of Christ does not mean we throw discernment out of the window. Like Paul said in 1 Corinthians, all things may be permissible, but they are not all beneficial. So how do we make choices on entertainment that honor God? Does God care about our TV and music choices as well?…
Do you ever think about what you think about? How about thinking about how what you think about may influence you in ways that you don't think about? Confused yet? With our brains spitting out over 50,000 thoughts per day, we find that it's crucial to start paying attention to what's bouncing around up there. Oftentimes our thought patterns, if we find them to be negative, have been impacting our emotions, our speech, and even our behavior. But once we stop them in their tracks, what do we do with them? In this episode we break down what it means to take your thoughts captive, and how doing so will set your mind free.…
Waiting is hard. Personally, between the two of us we could get frustrated waiting for our oatmeal water to boil, or waiting on other people to be ready to eat when we’re reaaallly hungry. So basically most of our patience issues are food related. BUT, what happens when the Lord requires for us to wait to see a promise fulfilled, or a dream realized? Do we allow our impatience to drive us to take matters into our own hands? Or do we use the time to prepare our nets for the season to come? This week, we dig into our own personal struggles with waiting, and lessons we’ve learned along the way. We discover that The Bible is full of examples that give us hope, and warning on how to wait well.…
In this episode, we dig in deeper to the ins and outs of starting, (and keeping!) a journey towards a healthier you. Achieving your fitness goals, always starts with a decision, a successful strategy, and your eyes focused on the right purpose. We've brought in our resident physical trainer, fitness Youtube and Instagram influencer, Jennifer Ibeanusi (also co-host of this podcast) to give you the motivation you need to discover how God has intended for us to care for the temples we've been given.…
In this episode, we sit down with an old friend, a regular on this podcast. She’s a singer-songwriter who has traveled quite a bit through out her life. She has led worship for hundreds on the stage at Elevation Church and for other congregations on the east coast. Currently, she is a part time worship leader for a local church in North Carolina. In her spare time, she co-hosts a podcast with her long-time friend. In this episode, she shares the trials and tribulations of finding and pursuing her God-given calling. Introducing our guest, Jillana Jones!…
In this week’s episode, we are breaking down 7 (ish) “pillars,” of healthy friendships. We pull from real-life stories of the mistakes we’ve made as friends and lessons we’ve learned along the way. If “communication is key,” then healthy, honest communication is the WHOLE door. The great thing about the lessons we’ve learned and the tools we’ve acquired over the years is that they are transferable to almost any relationship. So test these out on your mom, your boyfriend, your co-workers, your barista…you’ll thank us later.…
Meet Michael and Jomar Darbouze. A couple who's life together has been shaped by an unshakable faith. Their relentless pursuit for the Lord is contagious and has fostered a relationship that is built on love, laughter, and a deep longing to share all that God has entrusted to them with any one who crosses their path. They are one of the most powerfully dynamic couples filled with wisdom and humility. We're so excited to have them in this week's episode as we discuss discipleship, and why surrounding yourself with a community that is diverse in spiritual maturity is essential to walking out our faith.…
Meet Kristin "Mama Tyger" Robbins. She's a quiet storm who packs a mean punch when it comes to her love for the Lord. Her story blew us away and we hope it does the same to you. In this episode, Kristin shares how she discovered The Still Small Voice inside and developed an unshakable confidence to follow and obey His leading. Her story of following the Lord and holding onto faith led her on a relationship journey that points to the faithfulness and goodness of God.…
Understanding our total acceptance by God is crucial to processing life's disappointments. We were never promised that everyone is going to like us, or that we were going to be accepted, and get everything that we want. If we believe that the Lord really does have good intentions and good plans for us, should "human rejection" be in our vocabulary? Majesty Rose is a singer-songwriter based out of Raleigh NC. She was a finalist on American Idol season 13. Now a worship leader in Durham, NC - Majesty and her husband John write music for the church, host really sick Friendsgiving parties and have a dog-like cat named Prim. In this episode, we welcome our friend Majesty to wrestle with us, on the real reasons why rejection can sting so badly, and how we can apply God's truths to combat those feelings.…
In this episode, we tackle the toxic thought processes that have contributed to our body image, past and present. We cover how colorism shaped us early on, and how we allowed outside sources to contribute to the story that we wrote about ourselves. We want to leave you with ways to re-write the narrative in your mind about the way The Creator designed you to be, while also developing healthy patterns in your mind and your body to be the best you, you can be.…
We find that our culture often has two polarizing narratives for the single adult. You’re either, “All The Single Ladies” or drowning your sorrows in a pint of Ben and Jerry’s every Valentine’s Day. We’re here to tell you there’s a third option. In this episode we discuss our experience with being single in today's culture and the challenges that may come with it. We break down the ways in which we've found contentment and joy in our singleness, and how you can do the same.…
