On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. I was super flattered, when asked to interview Pastor Ted Wilson for Adventist Radio London. Elder Wilson is the President of the general conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The general conference coordinates the global ministry of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The Seventh-day Adventist Church is a christian denomination with 25 million believers worldwide and about 39,000 in the UK. As someone who is fascinated by and heavily invested in leadership growth and development I was excited to hear a perspective from a GLOBAL leader. Which is exactly what Uncle Teddy is. I asked him three questions, if they are of interest to you, you should have a listen. 1. What are some global trends that you are noticing from your work as president. 2. How can young people effectively challenge/raise concerns with local leadership without appearing rebellious or troublesome. 3. What are some of the jewels from the adventist tradition's past that can help it to be progressive and relevant in the present and future. Enjoy, leave your comments @lukecrwhyte, i'll be sure to respond.…

A very special episode of TYW Podcast. Recorded on Mother's day 2018, released the very next day. Parents are essential to effective youth ministry. Never overlook their importance. In fact, equip them..
For a long time I have felt that youth ministry has been in need of an overhaul. Which is why this episode struck a massive chord for me. Matt's real life experience of doing youth ministry differently is truly inspirational. Sit back enjoy and let me know what you think.
This week's guest challenges us to take a look at ourselves and to answer the question, am I being authentic? It amazes me how easy it is to fumble through life without having to deal with one's own self, one's inner demons, what lurks in the shadows. This episode is a rallying call not to hide but to be uniquely you, and share that person with the world. Check them out: https://authenticpeopleshare.com/…
