On this episode of Advances in Care , host Erin Welsh and Dr. Craig Smith, Chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia discuss the highlights of Dr. Smith’s 40+ year career as a cardiac surgeon and how the culture of Columbia has been a catalyst for innovation in cardiac care. Dr. Smith describes the excitement of helping to pioneer the institution’s heart transplant program in the 1980s, when it was just one of only three hospitals in the country practicing heart transplantation. Dr. Smith also explains how a unique collaboration with Columbia’s cardiology team led to the first of several groundbreaking trials, called PARTNER (Placement of AoRTic TraNscatheteR Valve), which paved the way for a monumental treatment for aortic stenosis — the most common heart valve disease that is lethal if left untreated. During the trial, Dr. Smith worked closely with Dr. Martin B. Leon, Professor of Medicine at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Chief Innovation Officer and the Director of the Cardiovascular Data Science Center for the Division of Cardiology. Their findings elevated TAVR, or transcatheter aortic valve replacement, to eventually become the gold-standard for aortic stenosis patients at all levels of illness severity and surgical risk. Today, an experienced team of specialists at Columbia treat TAVR patients with a combination of advancements including advanced replacement valve materials, three-dimensional and ECG imaging, and a personalized approach to cardiac care. Finally, Dr. Smith shares his thoughts on new frontiers of cardiac surgery, like the challenge of repairing the mitral and tricuspid valves, and the promising application of robotic surgery for complex, high-risk operations. He reflects on life after he retires from operating, and shares his observations of how NewYork-Presbyterian and Columbia have evolved in the decades since he began his residency. At long last, the hurlyburly is done, and Exit 19 is here, featuring new revelations about Flagstaff, AZ, nut festivals, gurus, and the Jimmy Eat World song The Middle (attention copyright attorneys: don’t worry, we never actually play the song, so calm down, have a drink, take it easy!). Speaking of copyright attorneys, they come in for some ridicule as well (attention copyright attorneys: have another drink), but none of this will be as memorable as the stunning facts about some of your favorite authors contained herein. As the arrival of the diabolical Space Fungus draws ever closer, it is important to remember the things in life that are important: Scientific Innovation, crown roast of pork, and our elected representatives keeping us safe from the dangers of Scientific Innovation. Let us also give thanks for the Lu, who reminds us that though the devil may be in the details, the Almighty is lurking somewhere in the platitudes. Plus, your awesome voicemails! This week, Cashmere Thoughts successfully fends off an imminent alien invasion whilst defending the honor of the most hallowed discount American pilsener in all the land. A special edition Panel of Distinguished Theatrical Experts has convened at Stuck Between Studios–Kristin Skye Hoffmann (Wide-Eyed Productions), Jon Stancato (Stolen Chair Theatre Company), and Gus Schulenburg (Flux Theatre Ensemble) join us to talk about their work as independent theatre artists re-imagining the traditional theatre company model. NYTheatre.com named Stolen Chair among its People of the Year in 2005 for, among other things, its breathtaking “live silent film for the stage” The Man Who Laughs. . They awarded the same honor to Flux in 2008 for, also among other things, its Angel Eaters trilogy–a cycle of three full-length plays performed over the course of an entire day tracking one family’s mysterious curse from the Depression to the early ’70’s and far into the future. Wide-Eyed was named among 2009’s People of the Year for, also also among other things, Spin Cycle –an evening of five politically-minded one-acts thematically connected by interstitial video segments featuring a faux-Reilly (see what I did there?) TV host called The Spin Cycle . Listen to their brilliance by streaming the show below, or click here . https://theroad2shambala.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/the-road-2-shambala-theater-panel.mp3 Copyright 2010 Bright Machine Productions…

Midnight Rudy has declared it long enough without his input on the show, and has accordingly taped a missive from the road that sheds some light on Sam’s current laundry predicament. Speaking of predicaments, Ben Camp has been so busy lately that we’ve not seen hide nor hair of the boy, until now–he joins us once again to explain the various EXTREMELY IMPORTANT tasks to which he’s been attending, and also helpfully puts the imminent alien invasion in the proper perspective. Vital Topics picks up where it left off last week, with an excoriating expose on Corporate Lingo, and Boswell debuts a new narration technique in another edition of All’s Well With Boswell. All that, plus music from Chris Cubeta and the Liar’s Club as well as Marc Orleans, when you stream it below, or download it here … https://theroad2shambala.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/the-road-2-shambala-exit-11comp.mp3 Copyright 2009 Bright Machine Productions…
There will be no apostrophes in the show description this week, because they make everything look all janky. Rather, we will simply tell you that this episode contains harrowing tales of Battletoads and cocaine, idle threats upon the life and well-being of Senator Joe Lieberman, the Holy Trinity of Oats, Peas, and Beans, partners in folk-rock crime Nat Cassidy and Brian Pluta, as well as the musical stylings of The Radio Grifters, straight out of Austin, TX (via South Korea). Plus, Boswell reads us The Single Greatest Poem of All-Time. All of this magic in one place, you ask? Yes, my friends, it’s all right here . https://theroad2shambala.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/the-road-2-shambala-exit-10comp.mp3…
It’s a Road 2 Shambala WORLD PREMIERE, as Phil Wells debuts Dudesong , his 5200+ line epic poem version of The Big Lebowski . Our Vital Topics panel covers the hopes and fears surrounding the decision to go to grad school, and Cashmere Thoughts would like you to celebrate your inner chorizo. The music of Dwight Smith hums throughout, and Boswell is here with the definitive explanation of why Thanksgiving really matters. IT’S THE EPISODE SAM’S UPSTAIRS NEIGHBORS DON’T WANT YOU TO HEAR–because they, as you will hear, totally SUCK. However, what does NOT suck is our interview with Rose Surnow and Guerrin Gardner, as well as Part 2 of last week’s Vital Topics segment, in which we ponder the most dramatic way for Alan Smith to end his life (don’t worry, it’s hilarious-hopefully). The Lu has placed the Hipsters of America on notice in this week’s Search 4 Delicious, and the lovely sounds of the Kelsey Jillette Group provide our melodic glue. Check it out right here . https://theroad2shambala.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/the-road-2-shambala-exit-8compressed.mp3…
Alan Smith has the new Droid phone-thingy, and everyone is jealous! Okay, fine, mostly just I am jealous. Also I am horrible with credit cards and nervous during phone interviews–but that does not stop me from conducting one with the incredible Rachel Flotard, front-woman for the awesome band Visqueen, who also provide the music for this week’s show. Did you know that Russian dressing and pastrami cannot, by themselves, fulfill your wildest sandwich fantasies? Neither did I, until recently. Speaking of dreams, there’s a kitchenwares factory in Gary, Indiana with a pretty crazy disembodied voice–the Lu has details in The Search for Delicious . Boswell is a pumpkin-brain–excuse me, has pumpkins on the brain, and though the seasons are changing, we hope you’ll keep it tuned right here . https://theroad2shambala.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/the-road-2-shambala-exit-7compressed.mp3 Copyright 2009 Bright Machine Productions…
This week, Cashmere Thoughts would like you to know that playing fantasy football may be dangerous to your long-term capacity for wonderment, and Vital Topics reveals the ugly truth about sloths as well as the happy facts about kittens with lasers. Comedian Mike Blejer joins us with a song about the enduring power of racial prejudice, and Boston correspondents Jobo and Lizzie file dual Philadelphia Reports on Trader Joe’s and madrigal singing, among other things. Nealie D has more freestyled mindblowings from the city of Chicago, The Lu brushes her teeth, and Boswell fires off his closing ruminations with his trademark calm. The thumping grooves of Analogue keep things rocking and rolling all through Exit 6, so stop messing about stream it below… https://theroad2shambala.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/road2shambalaexit6compressed.mp3 (Or click here to download .) This week, Cashmere Thoughts says God bless the child that remains blissfully unaware of dolphin cards and the user actions table. Daniel John Kelley joins us to offer some insights on the practical uses for origami (can it do your taxes?), and Philadelphia Correspondent Aaron Hollander would like to know if we are actually picking up what he’s putting down. Speaking of the Philadelphia Report, we’ve got three of them this week, as Ben Camp reveals some reassuring facts about the Youth of America (they still watch Full House !), and Neal Dandade proves that he can make a rhyme out of anything, including the start-up screen of his girlfriend’s DVD player. Vital Topics asks the central question on everyone’s mind at this time of year: do zombies sleep, and what does this mean about Cleopatra and her snake hat? Boswell has fixed his tape recorder, and musical guest Nicole Hale has brought her accordion, so consider yourself warned: Exit 5 is bringing the boomjamz directly to your face when you click here , or you can stream it directly below. https://theroad2shambala.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/the-road-2-shambala-exit-5.mp3 Copyright 2009 Bright Machine Productions…
