In Episode 5, the case of Shawn Helmenstein moves toward resolution. After confessing to the murder of Robbie Rarich, Shawn participates in a videotaped walkthrough of the crime scene, calmly recounting his actions in stark contrast to the brutality of the crime. At trial, the prosecution systematically dismantles his defense of emotional duress, presenting his confessions, the murder weapon, and witness testimonies. The sentencing judge delivers a pointed verdict, describing the murder as premeditated and calculated. Shawn is sentenced to life in prison, with parole eligibility only after serving 85% of his life expectancy. The episode also brings us into the emotional heart of the story, as Robbie’s family and friends reflect on the pain of the trial and their enduring quest for justice. As we approach the series finale, we’ll delve into Shawn’s life behind bars, his efforts for sentence reduction, and a fuller portrait of Robbie Rarich as remembered by those who loved him. Part 1 of 2 - In an attempt to deepen his understanding of AI, James interviews an expert who, interestingly enough, happens to be an AI chatbot. The interview proves challenging, as the AI often becomes evasive, stalls, or even "walks out" of the conversation. In Part 1, the AI shares its perspectives on true crime, discusses the Dakota Spotlight podcast, explores the cases that sparked James' fascination with true crime, delves into AI's own motives, and reveals how it generates its responses. Part 1 of 2 - Sajid Hussain, a Pakistani journalist in exile in Sweden after facing threats for his work on human rights abuses in Balochistan, went missing and was later found dead in the Fyris River. Although Swedish police concluded there was no foul play, suspicions persist that his death may have been linked to his investigative reporting, potentially involving Pakistani intelligence. The case underscores the risks faced by exiled journalists and leaves unanswered questions about the true cause of his death. Season 3, Episode 1. On a quiet Friday morning in September of 1998 a 17 year old girl named Aimee walked into the Police Department in Bismarck, North Dakota. The young woman said she wasn’t exactly sure, but she had a hunch that her 18 year old boyfriend Brian might have hurt his mother and father. Not a problem, said Bismarck Police, a simple welfare check would set this story straight. ‘The story’ wasn’t set straight though. But what exactly had happened? And where were the boy’s parents? Perhaps this girl Aimee and her many friends would help the police find answers. Certainly anyone would want to help find answers, wouldn’t they? Originally broadcast Summer 2021. When Kirra McLoughlin died her boyfriend said she must have overdosed on prescription drugs. That didn't explain the over one hundred bruises on her body however. And yet, nobody has been charged with Kirra's death. That didn't sit well with Jamie Pultz. He had met Kirra once at his former job, back when he was a police officer in Queensland Australia. When he heard that Kirra had died and nobody had been held accountable, he decided to do something about it. This is the third installment of our summer series about mysterious crimes and disappearances from around the globe and the people who fight to get justice for victims and their families. I'm still between Dakota Spotlight seasons, so today I am rebroadcasting for you one of my earliest pieces of audio work - an episode of a show I created to basically learn how to podcast in the first place - before Dakota Spotlight even existed. In fact, what follows was only the 5th podcast episode I ever put together – back when I was still figuring out how to work a microphone. This is not a true-crime story, and if you are an avid fan of Dakota Spotlight, you may have heard this once before between seasons one and two. But I'm gonna share it again now with a couple of updates. Why? Well, let me tell you. This story just feels relevant in a way and a much needed reminder in 2023. It's something I believe we can all relate to and be inspired by – and despite all the podcast content I've created since then, this story remains one of my favorites. It's a story about something we all have within us, something we have all felt at times, something you may have been considering as recently as this morning, as you lay in bed studying the ceiling above you. It's about remaining true to ourselves and our pursuit of our personal dreams in life – not the things others want us to achieve or accomplish, not what others believe we are capable of (or what they tell us we are incapable of) but rather those dreams and aspirations you feel burning deep down in your marrow or in your heart; the things we want to achieve or accomplish or maybe just what we want to stand for as a human being. In this case it's an inspiring story about how one determined 17-year-old farm kid made up his mind to defy the odds in 1976 and 1977. He set a goal that many assumed was unattainable. But, his irresistible humble spirit won over the initial naysayers and then rallied an army of followers – first his friends, then his tiny community on the prairie and finally the whole state of North Dakota. His name was Don Allard and in 1976 and 1977, he was a senior at the smallest high school in the state of North Dakota, Epping High with just 23 students. 23 farm-kids that nobody had ever heard of, in a town with no paved streets. And what was his goal? Don Allard was a basketball player, and somehow, this young man first envisioned and then set into motion the act leading his team, the Epping Eagles, to the finals of the coveted Class B State Basketball Tournament in 1977. In the end – in the final game of that tournament – Don Allard and his Epping Eagles lost to the largest high school in the state. But, with a similar spirit of Rocky Balboa, the hero of that year's best-picture at the Oscars, the Epping Eagles, with their mild-mannered and hard-working pursuit won the hearts of people everywhere. The legend of this Cinderella team and of their run at the state title remains perhaps the most memorable game in all of North Dakota's highschool sports history. It was a different time. It was a time before shot clocks and three point lines. It was before schools started consolidating teams across two or more schools to build bigger and better squads. It's safe to say, something exactly like this won't happen again in North Dakota. Don Allard had passed away in 2015 at age of 56 – before I recorded the following story. Interviews with Bob Allard Al and Linda Allard Clyde Vinger Mike Vinger Dale Keever Jay Bingeman Tommy Breivik Coach Larry Overbo. Hello Dakota Spotlight followers: I have a bit of a holiday treat for you today, which I am very excited to share with you. A few weeks ago, I traveled to the town of Montevideo, Minnesota. I was there to take part in a meeting with three of my colleagues to plan and discuss work for The Vault - which is Forum Communication’s online catalog of great stories about Midwest history, mysteries and, of course, true crime. Why did we convene in Montevideo, Minnesota? Montevideo was purely a logistical destination as we all live in different places; 3 of us drove to Montevideo where a 4th colleague lives. Her name is Trisha Taurinskas . Over coffee we asked Trisha if there were any local stories that she had considered for The Vault. It turns out there was one story that Trisha had on her mind–in fact, to me, it seemed to be stuck in her mind. I could tell right then and there, this story was not gonna to just go away for her—she was in the early phases of experiencing a nagging feeling that I know very well myself–I would describe it as an almost uncomfortable sense of ‘calling’ … a somewhat involuntary compulsion to act and go look for and find answers–all in the name of justice and the truth. And that’s exactly what she did–exactly what she is currently in the middle of doing... Fast forward a few months and now my holiday treat for you then, coming up right here, right now, is the full first episode of Trisha Taurinskas’ reporting on the death of Refugio Rodriquez . A Minnesota man found dead on a walking path – a man who had just told his family his life was in danger after he was outed as a confidential informant for law enforcement. Yet despite the suspicious death, his case was closed, the death ruled a suicide. But as you might imagine, and as Trisha sensed all along, there is a lot more to the story than that. / James Wolner email: jwolner@forumcomm.com More Dakota Spotlight https://www.inforum.com/dakotaspotlight Sign up for Dakota Spotlight's newsletter https://www.grandforksherald.com/newsletter (consider signing up for The Vault newsletter too) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/dakotaspotlight/ The Vault TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@truecrimevault Support Dakota Spotlight - Become a member https://inforum.com/subscribe Staying in touch with your community through local news and information is the gift that keeps giving all year long. Episode 4 of Season 9: Two days after the murders BCI and Mandan PD had zero suspects. But they had a lead. The vehicle. The mysterious man in orange drove a white Ford F-150 pickup and the cops caught a good image of it from a security camera in Center, North Dakota. They circulated the photo to all law enforcement and waited for someone to recognize it. That someone turned out to be detective Justin Krohmer. He looked at the photo and thought, 'That looks a lot like my chiropractor's vehicle.' In Season 9 of the Dakota Spotlight true crime investigative podcast, host James Wolner will re-examine this recent case. His exploration is a personal one: He was working in Mandan at the time of the murders and joined the first police press conference, his first step into true-crime podcasting journalism. Episode 3 of Season 9: In some ways it was elementary and simple. The way to catch the mysterious masked man in orange who killed four employees at RJR was to track him, to follow his trail. Not with a bloodhound but with video. Survellience video. In this episode law enforcement investigators recap how they painstakingly gathered video from local businesses to track the man in orange. That is until the trail went suddenly cold. Also in this episode, a little bit about Adam Fuehrer, one of the victims at RJR. Episode 2 of Season 9: In the second episode of The Mandan Murders, host James Wolner returns to the morning of the murders with a minute-by-minute look at Bockheim's discovery, a 911 call and the ensuing discovery of four murder victims. He also speaks with family of those killed, as they tell what happened on that fateful day. In this series, follow along as Wolner re-examines the morning of the murders, the hunt for the killer, his arrest and trial. On August 2, 1994 26-year-old Michele Julson dropped off her young son at his paternal grandparents home so she could run some errands in Bismarck, North Dakota. She wanted to pick up her paycheck and possibly play some bingo. She was expected back in just hours. Shelly never returned. What happened to Shelly is the central question of Season 7, Call Me Shelly – The Mysterious Disappearance of Michele Julson. Granted exclusive, unprecedented access by police to Shelly’s cold-case file, this season brings a play-by-play review of the initial investigation and examines the strange events surrounding Shelly's life and her disappearance. Present-day interviews with: Law enforcement, Shelly’s parents and Shelly’s friends. Who was harassing Shelly and vandalizing her car? Why are 104 pages of Shelly's police file missing? Who are the two mystery men Shelly met just days before she went missing. And the most important question of all: What happened to Shelly Julson? Season 6, Episode 10 - So far, we’ve focused on the facts. This episode, we'll focus on theories – our theories about what happened to Kristin Diede and Bob Anderson, who disappeared in North Dakota in 1993. James and Jeremy have four working theories of what might have happened to them. In this episode, they'll present their theories to a retired North Dakota homicide detective, Bob Haas. He’ll be hearing about this case in-depth – and our theories — for the first time. Haas will weigh in on what he thinks is most likely to have happened, and why nobody has been arrested and charged in the disappearance of Kristin and Bob. If you know what happened to Kristin and Bob or have vital information for Law Enforcement, call the Logan County (ND) Sheriff’s Office: 701-754-2495. Season 6, Episode 9 - Full interview with Clyde Diede. Listen in as we go deep on our lone but remarkable conversation with a significant person in this season: Clyde Diede, a chiropractor in Winner, South Dakota. Clyde encountered his then-wife, Kristin, at the Diede family farm near Wishek, North Dakota, the same weekend Kristin and her boyfriend Bob Anderson vanished, in mid-August, 1993. In the following years, law enforcement was very interested in Clyde. They even threw him in jail at one point to compel him to give them a hair sample. In this episode: We play you our entire conversation with Clyde and our other attempts to talk to him. Also, co-producers James Wolner and Jeremy Fugleberg take you behind the scenes, revealing their deliberations over how to use what Clyde told us in the call, a crucial component of this season of Dakota Spotlight. Season 6, Episode 7. How do two people just disappear? How does that happen and not trigger a massive manhunt, blanket TV coverage, cable news coverage and some sort of Netflix documentary show? In the case of Kristin Diede and Bob Anderson, it was about who they were. Or perhaps more so – who they weren’t. In this episode, co-producers James Wolner and Jeremy Fugleberg continue their investigation into the 1993 unsolved disappearance of Kristin Diede and Bob Anderson from Wishek, North Dakota. They’ll take a close look at all the fault lines, all the big cracks, that seemed to swallow up Kristin and Bob and the news of their disappearance, effectively squelching the hunt for them. Plus, James sneaks in a surprise note for Jeremy, right at the beginning of the episode. Season 6, Episode 6 - Follow the Van Just a few days after Bob and Kristin were last seen alive in North Dakota in August 1993, a manager at the Burlington Northern railroad yard in Aberdeen, South Dakota picked up the phone and called the police. There was a darn Dodge van just sitting in stall No. 10, he told them. It seemed to be abandoned. There were no license plates on the thing. Today, that same 1979 B200 Dodge van is in Logan County, North Dakota, where it is being held as evidence. The van belonged to Bob – it was how he and Kristin got to North Dakota, and they were in it the last day they were seen. So how did it end up abandoned in a city 100 miles away from Wishek? In this episode, co-producers James Wolner and Jeremy Fugleberg continue their investigation into the 1993 unsolved disappearance of Kristin Diede and Bob Anderson and share detailed information about the week following Bob and Kristin’s last sighting. See a 1979 Dodge van television commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ywx0PmnQris If you know what happened to Kristin and Bob or have vital information for Law Enforcement, call the Logan County (ND) Sheriff’s Office: 701-754-2495. Deon Wiggett woke up one day in 2017 with a startling realization. He had blocked out a traumatic experience from his past; he had been sexually abused as a teen by a schoolteacher. Anger turned to action and the result is a beautifully produced podcast about justice, activism and revenge, told in the most artful way. Dakota Spotlight spoke with him in August of 2021 to talk about his podcast My Only Story Check out the full catalog of Dakota Spotlight true crime podcasts at https://dakotaspotlight.com where you can sign up for a newsletter , subscribe to the new and exciting Spotlight PLUS ad-free experience and much more. When an innocent teenager is murdered, family members are left devastated and heartbroken. The closest these loved-ones can get to some kind of closure is when the person or persons responsible are apprehended and convicted of the crime. Sometimes that just never happens, even when we know who did it. In 1992, 13-year-old Brandy Myers left her home in Phoenix, Arizona to walk door-to-door and collect money for a book-a-thon. She never returned home. Police know who did it, but they won't be prosecuting him. This is the second installment of our summer series about mysterious crimes and disappearances from around the globe and the people who fight to get justice for victims and their families. In this episode Dakota Spotlight speaks with Erin Reed, victims advocate and producer/host of Sipping on Some Crime podcast. This is the first installment of our summer series about mysterious crimes and disappearances from around the globe and the people who fight to get justice for victims and their families. Marion Barter, aged 51, boarded a plane in Australia in 1997 to embark on a trip of a lifetime and has never been seen again. When her family went to the police they were told that Marion had been located and was safe and sound. But it wasn't that simple. 22 years later Marion's daughter Sally Leydon teamed up with Seven News in Australia and produced a podcast The Lady Vanishes . After two long years of hard work, the team may finally be close to answers about what happened to Marion Barter. Dakota Spotlight speaks with producer and host Alison Sandy to learn more about this surreal and very puzzling case om Australia. In episode 4 of CHASING BILLY: A pursuit for justice I look into two tips from listeners. Both included the name of someone they felt may have killed Billy Wolf. Law enforcement are familiar with one of these men but the other may be a name they have never heard before. In looking at the lives of these two men, we travel from Utah, to the HI-10 motel in Fargo. This journey takes us into the world of illegal drugs, stolen guns, the alleged ‘Fargo Mafia’ and more. Episode 5: Not unlike Cinderella’s slipper, a bloody shoe fits and Robert and Brian are apprehended and returned to North Dakota to await trial. The search for the fugitives may be over but the insanity is just beginning. ‘Manson-like’ and disturbing, the East Sweet crew ramp up their support for the killers ten-fold with sick salutes, love letters and an inconceivable act of disrespect towards the victims’ families. Former Police detectives Bob Haas and Lloyd Halvorson shake their heads and give us their own, present-day thoughts on what this crime meant: What was this thing, really? What may have actually happened that night and who all was actually in the know? What was the girl with the little red car thinking? Is she still alive? Can she give us answers today? Episode 4: While Detective Bob Haas and the medical examiner start putting the pieces together, detective Steve Lundin has a very frustrating second interview with Misty’s boyfriend Rick Storhaug. Timeline: Follow along as we dissect the many antics the East Sweet crew were up to on Wednesday, September 16th, 1998 - the last 12 hours before the crime. A darker side of Robert Lawrence’s character emerges from original police interviews and a present day interview with one of the runaways. Episode 3: As a key witness is patiently questioned by the police, the awful truth finally floats to the surface and the 'innocence' of Bismarck, North Dakota begins to slowly drown. For many, it's never been quite the same since half of the Bismarck Police department traveled 40 miles south of Mandan in search of two homicide victims. A hysterical and terrified woman rushes into the Police Department at 4 am Saturday, terrified for her own safety. She’s got more information about the gruesome murders. Episode 2: When Bismarck police detective Lloyd Halvorson learned that 18 year old Brian Erickstad and 27 year old Robert Lawrence were wanted for questioning, he knew exactly where to go: the corner of Sweet and 7th in downtown Bismarck. It should have been easy to find answers. All they had to do was interview a few teenagers, friends of the suspects and police would learn who may have been involved and most urgent and important, if they were killed, where were bodies of Gordon and Barbara Erickstad? It should have been easy. While waiting on Season 2 to be released, I’m releasing an edited version of a story I did in 2015 about a young boy with a dream, and the town that got behind him in 1976. Also a short word on Season 2. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Curiosity. What is it really? Some say it is ‘an appetite for knowledge, information, and understanding.’ Others say, Curiosity killed the cat.’ NASA sent a Rover named Curiosity all the way to Mars. It’s been exploring that planet since 2012, gathering data and collecting images, just to feed our thirst for knowledge and understanding. About four years ago I came across a short newspaper article, and pretty much from the get go, my curiosity could not be contained. In 1976, a banker and his wife were kidnapped and murdered in the small, quiet town of Zeeland, North Dakota, population 300. They were killed by young men with local ties. One of them went to the same church as the victims. They were caught, convicted and given life sentences and there has never been any doubt about their guilt. So why my curiosity? Perhaps because of the missing pieces. A lot of the pieces were in place; the who , where , when and how , although I would discover that even some of those were inaccurate and needed to be replaced with the corrected ones. But completely missing was the, Why. Why Well, it was a senseless crime, people say. In fact, when the Banker and his wife were buried, the pastor at the funeral said, ‘‘Things happen which we cannot understand.’ And I thought maybe that’s true. Maybe we can never fully understand it. But if NASA can spend 2.5 Billion dollars to send rovers to Mars to look at rocks, perhaps I can spend a year of my life trying to fill in some of the missing pieces of a story about 2 innocent people killed in cold blood. So, I sought out every person, every document, every photograph, every article I could find. I reached out to every source of information, including the men who committed this crime. I consulted any authority I could locate. Until finally one morning, I woke up and realized. At this moment, in many ways, I know more about this story than anyone else does. And when you wake up, realizing you are the authority on a story, well then it’s time to tell the it complete with all the new pieces you’ve found. Or as the author Norman Maclean wrote in his book Young Men and Fire, ‘Often the best we can do with catastrophes, even our own, is to find out exactly what happened and to restore some of the missing parts — hopefully even the arch to the sky.’ Dakota Spotlight Season two will be released sometime during the fall or early winter of 2019.
