29:43In 2016, Yuriy Boyechko founded Hope for Ukraine to raise awareness for voices not heard in Ukraine, especially children affected by HIV and AIDS. Providing medical care for children with disabilities as well as food and clothing for families that live in extreme poverty. After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Yuriy’s work surged in importance. 1:43:24Season 6 of Fully Scored starts off with a bang! In a fresh new format, we are honoured to welcome not one, not two, but three esteemed retiring/retired staff bandmasters for an enlightening discourse. Ken Waterworth, of the Melbourne Staff Band, Olaf Ritman, of the Amsterdam Staff Band, and John Lam, of the Canadian Staff Band, talk about this seismic shift in staff bandmaster leadership that we’re currently experiencing. They regale us with cherished memories from their illustrious times with their respective bands, recounting favourite moments, epic tours, and innovations they have championed. The three outgoing leaders also impart invaluable wisdom to their incoming successors, ensuring a seamless transition of musical excellence. The episode also includes the introduction of a new segment, ‘Fully Scored news’, where we uncover some of the latest developments in the world of Salvation Army music. In a thrillingly close contest, we discover who will be crowned the ultimate Staff Bandmastermind champion. Our heartfelt gratitude extends to Fully Scored Producer Simon Gash, whose meticulous editing and masterful organisation have brought this episode to life. We also thank the Staff Bandmastermind question researchers: Darren Waterworth (MSB), Stephen Pavey (CSB), and Ronald Slijkhuis (ASB). 56:59Father Christmas can’t personally attend all his press obligations in the run-up to the big day. So, in traditional fashion, he sent one of his trusted helpers. Kevin Coates is Matthew Frost’s guest on this year’s festive Fully Scored. Kevin is the Band Manager for the International Staff Band and tells us about this role and his career in military music which preceded his appointment to the ISB. Australian composer Noel Jones talks about his march, Christmas Praise, which must be one of the most-played marches by Salvation Army bands all over the world. The members of the Fully Scored creative team are this month’s guests on the Arid Island. Andrew Blyth and Simon Gash reveal what album they’d take if planning a trip to the Arid Island over Christmas. Regular features, Band Manager, Sparsely Scored and Bandmastermind complete another episode. 1:07:21On this episode, host Matthew Frost is joined (virtually) by Garry Todd – the long-time Principal Cornet of the Melbourne Staff Band. Born in the UK, Garry talks about his formative years at Chalk Farm and then his move to the other side of the world. Garry also talks about other stereotypical Australian topics: cricket, vegemite and lions. Ron Holz returns to Fully Scored to share a just a fraction of his wealth of Salvation Army music-knowledge. James Curnow’s ‘The great salvation war’ is the topic for this episode’s analysis. From an idyllic island to the Arid Island. Armed with just one album, Jerome Astwood leaves the tranquillity of Bermuda and heads to a much less appealing environment. But what album will he choose to keep him company?
