“That's taxpayer’s money that is going to support research and development and pilot projects to develop a food system that is based on environmental destruction and greed and disregard for animals, fish, and any of the other marine mammals that might be around it.” - Andrianna Natsoulas Andrianna Natsoulas is the campaign director for Don't Cage Our Oceans, an organization that exists to keep our oceans free from industrial fish farms. Offshore finfish farming is the mass cultivation of finfish in marine waters, in underwater or floating net pens, pods, and cages. Offshore finfish farms are factory farms that harm public health, the environment, and local communities and economies that rely on the ocean and its resources. Don’t Cage Our Oceans are a coalition of diverse organizations working together to stop the development of offshore finfish farming in the United States through federal law, policies, and coalition building. And, although it is not yet happening, right now the US Administration and Congress are promoting this kind of farming, which would be nothing short of disastrous for the oceans, the planet and the people and animals who live here. dontcageouroceans.org…

Welcome & Prayer: Pastor Steve Smith Musical Selection: "Goodness of God" - Elizabeth Tenney Obituary: Meribeth Tenney Family Reflections: Ami Randazzo, Jesse Tenney, and Alana Gentosi Musical Selection: "O Little Town of Bethlehem" - Ayla and Eliana Gentosi Family Reflection: Michael Gentosi Musical Selection: "I Surrender All" - Lucia Randazzo Final Prayer: Pastor Steve Smith Betty Jean Billings was born February 11, 1934 in Albia, Iowa. She was a beautiful surprise to her parents, George and Elizabeth Stevenson, since her mom was 49 when Betty was born. She grew up loved and cherished by her parents and her four older siblings. Hazel, her older sister by 25 years, was a second mother to her. By the time of her graduation from Albia High School, Betty was dating the love of her life, Ron. In Albia, they were known as Babe and Betty Jean. Ron was two years older and enlisted in the Army during the Korean War. While Ron was on leave in December 1952, they planned a wedding in less than two weeks and were married December 26, 1952. Betty went home to Jesus on their 72nd anniversary. Betty moved to Des Moines for work while Ron was in the service and this is where they made their home following his discharge. Betty became trained as a stenographer and was adept at the lost art of shorthand. She worked for the state before she began working for the Rock Island Railroad, which later became the Chicago Northwestern. She worked for the railroad for over 30 years. Ron and Betty had two daughters, Ronda and Meribeth. Betty was a devoted mom, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved her son-in-laws as sons. She was happiest when we all could be together. She would do anything for each of us. Betty loved Jesus and her life was built around her faith. Early in their marriage, Ron and Betty began attending Central Gospel Chapel which later became Creekside Church. Betty’s closest friends, her buddies, were a part of her church family. Betty made friends wherever she went. She started going to the YMCA and later began teaching water aerobics. Some very special friendships were made and this group continues to meet together. She only had four months at Kennybrook Village but had already made an impact with staff and residents. Betty loved the outdoors and being active. She loved to walk, to be in her swimming pool and, if you really wanted her to be happy, you would take her on a boat ride. She enjoyed waterskiing and snowskiing. Betty left this earth December 26, 2024. She will be deeply missed by her precious husband, Ron, Ronda and Rick Gentosi, Meribeth and Doug Tenney, 8 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A public visitation will be held on Monday, December 30, 2024, at Creekside Church (2743 82nd Pl, Urbandale, IA 50322) from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., with a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be held at Sunny Hill Cemetery, in Grimes, IA, following the luncheon. Bob's message follows and Advent reading by Bruce and Jill Cameron. The helpful resources Bob included in his sermon notes are included below. Worship music permitted under CCLI License #264436. RESOURCES: Chronological Reading Plan: https://www.blueletterbible.org/assets-v3/pdf/dbrp/1Yr_ChronologicalPlan.pdf Psalms Helps (source: Moody Bible Commentary, © 2014) Characteristics of Hebrew poetry: 1) Poetic language: Rich, concise word choice, powerful word pictures, e.g. "as the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God" (42:1) 2) Inclusio: "Book ending" or "bracketing" of ideas with identical or parallel phrases to create a poetic unit of thought, e.g. "hope in God, for I shall again praise Him for the help of His presence"/ "Hope in God, for I shall yet praise Him, the help of my countenance and my God" (42:5, 11) 3) Parallelism: One idea presented in relation to another through parallel thoughts. Generally, parallelism is of three types: a) Synonymous parallelism: consecutive lines present the same or similar idea in different words, e.g “He raises the poor from the dust, and he lifts the needy from the ash heap.” (Ps 113:7) b) Antithetical parallelism: in which consecutive lines present contrasting or opposite ideas, e.g. The LORD keeps all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy. (Ps 145:20) c) Synthetic parallelism: in which consecutive lines present different, yet complementary ideas, e.g. “He trains my hands for battle, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze. (Ps 18:34) 4) Acrostic Structure: Each verse in the psalm begins with a consecutive letter of the Hebrew alphabet (e.g. Psalm 119, the longest psalm, is an acrostic praise to the Lord and His Word. It has 22 stanzas of eight verses; each stanza begins with the same letter. Acrostic structure is a helpful memory device, and reflects God's truth from A to Z. 5) Musical Instruction: Written to be sung, identified as "song," "psalm," or mentioning musical instruments or the choir director in the heading Types of Psalms: 1) Psalms of Praise and Thanksgiving: Often related to specific incidences of personal deliverance. They include a proclamation of praise to God, a report of deliverance, a renewed determination to praise, and often instruction for corporate praise. 2) Hymnic Psalms: More specifically hymns, rather than related to personal deliverance. These have the common elements of: (1) call to praise; (2) cause for praise; and (3) concluding exhortation to praise. Often include a note regarding the choir or a musical notation. 3) Songs: To be sung, often including additional musical directions. 4) Laments: Cries or prayers of help in times of distress. Include (1) an introductory plea to the Lord, (2) the specific lament describing the issue, (4) petition for help, and (5) a vow to praise the Lord despite circumstances and regardless of deliverance. 5) Imprecatory Psalms: Calling for specific judgments to fall on the enemy - the plea of God's people for justice.…

John Roskam's Funeral Service at Creekside Church, Saturday, July 20, 2024 Celebrating a Life Well Lived: John Ray Roskam (March 13, 1939 – July 14, 2024) Officiating: Pastor Steve Smith Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:1-8 Music provided by Jennifer Thomas (Soloist) and Karen McFadden (Pianist) Pallbearers: Silas Thomas, Simeon Thomas, Jacob Roskam, Devon Roskam, Curtis Guyer, Samuel Thomas Lunch following service Private burial at Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter, Iowa Psalm 16:5-11 Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful[a] one see decay. You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand. "Christians Never Say Goodbye" written by The Nelons "Jerusalem City of God" written by The Hoppers John Ray Roskam was born on March 13, 1939 in Cedar Falls, Iowa to Albert and Olive (Schneidermann) Roskam. At the age of 14, he trusted the Lord Jesus as his personal Savior. After graduating from Cedar Falls High School in 1957, he “pestered” the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company until they hired him. Starting as a lineman, he would work his way up to supervisor and later course developer over 29 years, moving to Waterloo, Bettendorf, Iowa City, and finally Des Moines. He joined the US Navy, serving in the Reserves from 1961-1967, with two of those years in active duty. In 1962 John joined a group from his church in attending a winter retreat in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. It was on a toboggan there that he met the love of his life, Ruth Faulkner. Although he had brought several girls in his car, he offered to drive Ruth home to Chicago, saying it was “only 200 miles out of his way”. After a long-distance courtship, they were married on November 27th, 1965. God blessed their marriage with four children: Roger (Lori), Jennifer (Vaughn Thomas), Ryan (Susie) and Jay; grandchildren, Jacob and Devon Roskam; Silas, Tori (Sam) Thoman, Arianna, and Simeon Thomas; and Curtis Guyer. On December 24, 2023 Carolina Thoman was welcomed as their first great-grandchild. In 1987, John took early retirement but was never idle. He started driving a school bus for Johnston, hired on as a salesman at the new Best Buy, videotaped many events and weddings, gave tractor rides at the Machine Shed Restaurant, and he never stopped collecting and working on telephones. Later, John and Ruth enjoyed traveling and escaping the Iowa winters by heading south. He is survived by his sister, Shirley Huebert of New Mexico, brother-in-law Dick (Arlene) Faulkner of Wisconsin, and many nieces and nephews. He went to be with the Lord on the morning of July 14, 2024 after living with Parkinson’s for several years. Family will greet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, July 19, 2024 at Creekside Church, 2743 82nd Place, in Urbandale. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2024 at the church. A private interment will occur at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Parkinson’s Foundation in loving memory of John. Online condolences may be expressed at www.HamiltonsFuneralHome.com…

Steve Smith :: Creekside Church :: Sunday, July 7, 2024 "We who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please ourselves. Each of us should please our neighbors... to build them up. ...so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ." From Pastors Steve's message from Romans 15:1-13, believers' (strong and weak in faith) obedience to 2 Christ-empowered imperatives promotes unity, which in turn proclaims God's glory. Steve's message follows announcements and a baptism service in which Leslie Martinez and Jordan Lamb share powerful personal testimonies of their salvation in Christ. Steve Smith :: Creekside Church :: Sunday, June 30, 2024 God’s love has brought us freedom in Christ—freedom in how we dress, what we drink, or where we go. But a Christian’s love should compel us to in faith limit that freedom when it’s a potential stumbling block for others. Pastor Steve’s message from Romans 14:13-23 shows us 4 guidelines for lovingly limiting our liberty in order to promote unity and maturity in Christ’s body. Steve Smith :: Creekside Church :: Sunday, June 23, 2024 In Christ, we have freedom—but what are believers free to do? From the clothes we wear to the music we sing to the Bible translation we preach from, there's never been a shortage of differing opinions about the “right” and “wrong” way to do church—even among Paul’s first century audience, where Christians disagreed over what to eat and when to worship. From Romans 14:1-12, in light of the fact that God accepts us, owns us, and judges us, Pastor Steve interjects a Biblical perspective on our passing judgment regarding matters of conscience. Steve Smith :: Creekside Church :: Sunday, June 9, 2024 The apostle Paul shifts from how a relationship with Christ impacts our relationship with others in Romans 12 to our relationship to the government in Romans 13. How should Christians think about submitting to the civil authorities God has put over us? What do we do when the government celebrates evil instead of punishing it? In Pastor Steve’s message from 13:1-7, Paul provides instruction to believers in our requirement, our reasons, and our response when it comes to obedience to the law of the land.
