Pursuit: The Founders' Guide to Happiness

The “pursuit of happiness” is one of the most famous phrases in American history, and when America’s founders wrote it in the Declaration of Independence, they intended it to mean happiness through lifelong learning and self-improvement. To start our series, Jeffrey Rosen and scholar Robert P. George , the McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence and director of the James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions at Princeton University, trace how the meaning of pursuit of happiness has changed. Then, American filmmaker Ken Burns shares how — even as he has spent his “entire life trying to figure out the United States” — daily self-reflection has given him new perspectives on what the founders faced 250 years ago. Is is possible to be a film photographer and save money? Shutter Brothers Wayne and Kevin think so, and they break it down in their latest UJC Podcast. And it's not just about shooting cheaper film. The Shutter Bros. also share memories of The Great Film Photo Meetup, which took place August 9-10 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Well over twenty film photographers (ncluding several podcast hosts) from from at least seven states gathered in The Scenic City to make photographs and get to know each other. The event was a complete success, and the only question now is where will it be held next year? Stay tuned. Wayne and Kevin round out the show with an email updste from listener Ryan regarding his effort to use an LED light source for his enlarger. Happy Photography!…

After an early summer break, Wayne and Kevin have film to develop, prints to make, and project to pursue. Kevin's project has been making contact print triptychs using one of the cheapest new cameras availbable today, the "Plastic Filmtastic" Debonair 120 from the Film Photography Store . This $20 camera often gets compared with the legandary Holga, but it is not the same camera. While the Debonair also has a plastic lens, Kevin believes that it makes better photographs than the Holga while still producing vintage vignetting effects. However, what really separates the Debonair from the Holga is that the Debonair makes 6x4.5cm rectangle images (as opposed to the Holga's 6x6cm square images). Inspired by Wayne's idea of using his Fuji GS645 camera as a medium format 'half-frame' camera, Kevin began photography old business signs with his Debonair with an eye toward contact printing three images on a singel 4x6 postcard. It's still in the 'proof-of-concept' stage, but the possibilities are real indeed! Meahwhile, Wayne empties out the UJC mailbag and reads some great listener feedback. And finally, the Shutter Brothers discuss the Great Film Photo Meetup Chattanooga , which happens on Saturday and Sunday, August 9-10. Happy Photography!…

The Shutter Brothers are waxing nostalgic about the old days of local camera and photography shops - and that's easy for them to do, because Kevin spent many happy hours hanging out in them, and Wayne actually work in and owned one. All we can say is "you should have been there," because it was a magical as you would expect - if you are as crazy about cameras as we are. The official start of summer is just days away, and both Wayne and Kevin are thinking about travel photography and (of course) travel film cameras. So, Wayne gives a run down of his recent acquistion the Fuji GS645 Professional Wide 60 medium format rangefinder camera and how it might be a good choice for travel photography. Meanwhile, Kevin is preparing for his first ever trip to California by choosing a camera to take along. You guessed it, it's his Leica M2. What is your go to travel film camera? The Shutter Brothers are excited about a photowalk that will take place in Chattanooga on August 9-12 involving many of your favorite film photography podcasters. Listen for details. Oh, and we also give away a Minolta Maxxum XTsi AF 35mm AF camera complete with a Minolta AF 35-70mm f4 zoom lens. As always, we'd love to hear from our listeners, so drop us a line at unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com and tell us abour your photography. The Shutter Brothers (Wayne and Kevin) are back and ready to talk about photobooks. Kevin has recently become acquainted with the published work of the American photographer, Robert Adams, and in particular his book, Summer Nights, Walking . Having found several YouTube about Summer Nights, Walking , Kevin made the decision to find a copy and purchase it, and now he is able to view the photographs in the manner Robert Adams intended - in a finely published book. Does this matter? Listen to find out. Next, the Shutter Bros. discuss the concept of revisiting past photographic efferts and the good things that might result. Whether it be revisiting a subject, a darkroom print, or even a piece of grear, sometimes the passage of time alone can be worth the effort and produces a 'remake' that becomes the keeper. Kevin wants to give a big shout out to listener's Todd and Jason for generaouly sending him several darkroom prints over the past year or so. And speaking of sharing, Kevin is giving away his Minolta Maxxum XTsi 35mm camera paired with a Maxxum AF 35-70mm f 4 zoom lens to a lucky listener. Finally, Wayne and Kevin have decided on a location for the 4th Annual Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers. You can enter the contest and/or send us comments, questions, tips, reviews, and stories to unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com. You also can find us on Facebook and Instagram , and feel free to leave your feedback there. Until next time . . . Happy Photography!…

The Shutter Brothers are back fresh from an early morning photowalk to Richey Ridge Falls (near Soddy Daisy, Tennessee) and are ready to share their recent experiences photographing both together and also with a group of fellow film photography podcasters at Old Car City in White, Georgia. Along the way, Wayne and Kevin disuss ideas for the 4th Annual Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers. It all starts with getting out with your camera ends with having a photograph to share. Ane speaking of sharing, Wayne is sharing some of his photography at the Annual Photography Exhibit & Competition at the Arts Center in Athens, Tennessee. The show is presented by the Athens Area Council for the Arts and runs from March 24 to May 30, 2025. If you live anywhere near East Tennessee, then make the trip to Athens to check out Wayne's work. Now that Kevin has the Leica M2 he's wanted for so long, it didn't take long for him to think about adding a 35mm lens to his kit. Actually, he already has a Leica 35mm lens, but it is a screwmount Elmar f 3.5. Can it be used with a Leica M camera? The answer is "yes," if you have a LTM to M mount adapter. Leica made them back in the day, and now they are made cheaply in China. But just how compatible are they. Find out in the show. it's spring, and that means time for some de-cluttering. So, Kevin is giving away a camera! It's a fully functional Minolta Maxxum XTsi with a Minolta AF 35-70mm f 4 zoom lens. It's the camera Kevin used for color photography on his Alaskan cruise last September, and now it can be yours. You can enter by email at unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com. Once agaiin our listeners chime in with some great email. We'd love to hear from you, too. Happy Photography! Wayne's photography can be seen at The Arts Center in Athens, Tennessee through May 30, 2025. Gegory Davis (The Naked Photographer) created two YouTube vieos about his experience with the Intrepid Enlarger, which used LED light to emulate contrast filters. https://youtu.be/Rqq_wwrZxk0?si=3JEXYBVQje9gBS3S https://youtu.be/bp7SN4ua1cw?si=XFeM1J4uo6lK3B_h…

Wel it finally happened. Kevin now owns a Leica M2 after an unexpected local ad pops up. Not an impluse buy, mind you, as his search for the right M2 and the right time to buy it has been years in the making. but to say that Kevin is excited is quite the understatement. Meanwhile, Wayne has been playing with a compact German designed camera of his own, the Rollei 35. And compact doesn't really describe just how small this full frame 35mm rangefinder camera is. Ergonomic it is not, but could Wayne like it anyway? After some show and tell, the Shutter Brothers dive into some listener feedback, and once again, we all learn something in the process. The Shutter Brothers are back with the first show of 2025, and its time to read some of the listener feedback that's in the UJC mailbag. Our listeners have lots of great questions and tips for us on topics like the best ways to meter with and without a light meter and the importance of shooting digital images in RAW format. And two of our listeners weigh in on why Kevin (who, as you no doubt know, has red green color blindness) can see colors more accurately when they appear on a screen as opposed to seeing them in person. We love the feedback we get from our listeners, and we will have more listener questions in our next show. Meanwhile, both Wayne has been having unexpected troubles with hs film development process. As you know, Wayne develops his Ilford FP4+ 4x5 inch film sheets in a self-mixed modified Caffenol CL developer. This highly compensating process is cental to getting the negatives to which he is accustomed, namely detail in both shadows and highlights. This results in negatives that, because they contain all the important "information," are easier to print. However, Wayne's last two batches have had brown streaks and over developed highlights. Wayne wants to know why and what he can do about it. you can always reach the Shutter Brothers at unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com or at our Facebook and Instagram pagers (@UCJpodcast). The Shutter Brothers are in improvisation mode for this impromptu yet informative show with a full range of film photography related topics. And yes, they always have some "showing and telling" to do. Wayne begins with a discussion of his Canon Canonet QL17 G3, an excellent little compact 35mm rangfinder camera (often called "The Poor Man's Leica"). When this very capable camera is paired with the Canon Canolite D flash, it produces some of the best flash photography the Bros. have ever seen. Wayne explains how in the show. Meanwhile, Kevin reveals what camera he bought after declaring his Wisner 4x5 would be the last camera he would ever buy? Would you believe it was a DSLR? Listen to the show to learn what and why. As usual, our listeners contribute some excellent questions and comments on topics ranging from how a camera's depth of field preview feature works to ideas for macro photography on the cheap. Show notes for this and all our shows can be found at www.unclejonesyscameras.blogspot.com , and we hope you will check our blog site out. The 3rd Annual Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers is just around the corner, and both Kevin and Wayne are getting ready for a fantastic day of photography and fun. It all happens on Saturday, October 26 at Fort Southwest Point in Kingston, Tennessee. Hundreds of late 18th centery military and civilian reenactors will converge for Kingston's Living History Reenactment Weekend to celebrate the city's 225th birthday, providing a unique photographic opportunity. All the details are in the podcast, including what cameras Kevin and Wayne will be using. And speakig of choices, Kevin must decide which of three 50mm lenses to use for the photowalk. Is one better than the other? Of course, Wayne has some great advice for testing lenses. Meanwhile, Kevin has been learning how to make better scans of his color negatives. Listen to find out what software he's been using. Finally, Kevin and Wayne read some great listener email. You can always contribute to the show by sending your input to unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com . And check out our show notes at www.unclejonesyscameras.blogspot.com . The Shutter Brothers are in the studio - and so is Wayne's new camera! And what a camera it is! The Canon VI-L is as impressive a 35mm meter-less mechanical shutter rangefinder camera we've ever seen. Could it be better than a Leica? Listen and find out. Meanwhile, Kevin is back from his amazing Alaskan cruise with six and a half rolls of exposed film. Listen for a report on how his two SLR cameras and three lenses performed on the 2000 mile journey. Next, the Shutter Bros read some listener questions about focus loupes and stand development, the latter of which serves as a chance to discuss Wayne's updated Caffenol CL formula. Both Wayne and Kevin have used it with 4x5 sheet film with excellent results, but would it work with roll film? Wayne's Leica-busting Canon VI-L isn't the only camera Wayne had been testing out lately. The Goerz Minicord is one of the most unique cameras we've ever seen. It's a subminiature twin lens reflex camera that uses double perforated 16mm film. Was it intended to be used as a spy camera? We've got opinions, as usual. Fiinally, Wayne and Kevin preview our 3rd Annual Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers, which is going to happen on Saturday, October 26, at Fort Southwest Point near Kingston, Tennessee. The city of Kingston will be celebrating its 225th birthday with period military reenactments, and the photography opportunities will be numberous and rich. No matter what kind of camera you bring, you will have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to make interesting photographs, as well as connect with other photographers. We hope to see you there. If you have a camera with an automatic exposure mode (such as aperture or shutter priority), you may have wondered about that dial on your camera with +1 +2 and -1 -2? That dial is the way you access your camera's exposure compensation, and knowing how to use it will make you a better photographer. Shutter Brothers Wayne and Kevin do a deep dive into how exposure comensation works and when you should use it. Meanwhile, Kevin shares his thoughts about his opportunity to use his 'dream' camera. Was it a positive experience? Will Kevin be shelling out some big bucks? Or, is there a greater lesson to be learned here? Listen to find out. Next, Wayne and Kevin get philisophical again and share some of the deep 'dark' thoughts they have been having lately with "Thoughts from the Dark(room)." If you've been having some deep thoughts about your photography lately, you can share them with us by email ( unclejonesyscameras@gmail.com ), Instagram (@UJCPodcast) or Facebook (also @UJCPodcast). After a fun morning of photography, the Shutter Brothers are back to the podcast table - and Kevin has questions! Lately, he's been in the darkroom trying out fiber based paper for the first time, and he has much to learn about the differences between resin coated and fiber based paper when it comes to exposing, developing, fixing, washing, and drying processes. Fortunately, Wayne has been printing on FB paper for decades, so get ready to learn, everybody! The look and feel of FB paper makes mastering the learning curve worth it. Kevin also reviews a fine photo book, New York Changing: Revisiting Berenice Abbott's New Yor k by Douglas Levere. Berenice Abbott had a long and very successful photography career and is well known for her documentary photography of 1930's New York City. Levere attempts to rephotograph Abbott's subjects to demonstrate the changes time has brought about, and the book contains many side by side comparisons of both Abbott's and Levere's photography. Anyone who has interest in urban large format photgraphy will enjoy it very much! Next, Wayne leads a discussion about Edward Weston's quote, "To photograph a rock, have it look like a rock, but be more than a rock." Exactly how does a developing phoographer begin to make images that express feelings or tell stories? Wayne has some practical and useful tips. Don't forget about our 3rd Annual Photowalk with the Shutter Brothers, which will happen on Saturday, October 26, at Fort Southwest Point in Kingston, Tennessee. If you've ever thought about photographing a military reenactment, this is your chance. There will be hundreds of reenactors patroling the reconstructed Fort Southwest Point providing ample photographic opportunities. Mark your calendar!
